CMU earns piece of MAC West crown MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Cooper Rush set the Central Michigan single-season passing yardage record and freshman Romello Ross scored four touchdowns Saturday as the Chippewas closed the regular season with a 35-28 Mid-American Conference victory over game Eastern Michigan at Kelly/Shorts Stadium. The win lifted CMU to 7-5 overall and it finished 6-2 in the MAC for a share of the West Division championship under first-year coach John Bonamego. Eastern finished 1-11, 0-8. Huskies, Rockets, Broncos and Chippewas share MAC West title By MIKE SMITH TOLEDO, Ohio -- Junior Cory Davis caught six passes for 139 yards and two touchdowns Friday as Western Michigan knocked off No. 24 Toledo in a key Mid-American Conference game at the Glass Bowl. Thanks to Ohio’s win over Northern Illinois Tuesday, Toledo entered Friday in position to punch its own ticket to next week’s MAC title game. It could not pull it off, losing for the second time in as many games on home turf. Ultimately, Toledo lost to two of its chief competitors. “They were a good football team and they outplayed us. We didn’t play Rocket football today,” UT senior linebacker Chas Murdock said of the Broncos. “On defense, you can’t let up the big plays, and we did that today. We had them where we wanted them, and in critical situations they came through and we didn’t." Friday, Nov. 27; Noon ET Glass Bowl; Toledo, Ohio CBS Sports Network WEATHER College football teams can hardly count on a second chance, but occasionally a second chance can come there way. It might be said that the 2015 Toledo Rockets are getting a do-over Friday when they meet Western Michigan at the Glass Bowl. A little over three weeks ago, UT was in a position to deliver a virtual knockout to defending champion Northern Illinois' bid for a return to the championship game. The Huskies, however, overcame second quarter losses of quarterback Drew Hare and standout receiver Tommylee Lewis to post a come-from-behind 32-27 victory. That, along with a Huskies win over Western Michigan two weeks later, put NIU in the drivers seat for a trip to the championship tilt. The Huskies may still be at Ford Field in Detroit December 4, but an upset loss to Ohio Tuesday means NIU now needs a Toledo loss to Western Michigan. As before against NIU, Toledo will be on home turf. Also, the Rockets were ranked No. 24 prior to the NIU loss, but fell out of the Top 25 until this week, when they regained the No. 24 spot. Then, too, Toledo's challenge will be one of the top offenses in the Mid-American Conference. Here's more on the two teams: BY EVAN MEYER KENT, OHIO – The Kent State Golden Flashes improved their record to 3-1 on the young basketball season as they led from wire-to-wire, defeating the Red Flash of Saint Francis (PA) 79-60 Tuesday night at the MAC Center. By Doug Zaleski BallStateSports.com MUNCIE, Ind. -- If strong fundamentals count for anything in basketball – and you would be hard-pressed to find anyone to dispute that – the Ball State Cardinals have shown so far this season that they are capable of playing with that kind of discipline. The Cardinals gave a sound performance in several areas Wednesday night in Worthen Arena when they beat IU Kokomo 90-54 for their third straight victory. MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Gulf Coast Showcase did not play out for the Central Michigan Chippewas the way it may have been envisioned. But, with it just being Thanksgiving on the calendar, there's still plenty of season to go and, coach Keno Davis said, the trip to Florida will benefit the Chippewas in the long run. CMU went cold in the second half and its late rally came up short Wednesday as it fell to Milwaukee, 84-78, in the Chippewas' third and final game of the showcase at Germain Arena. YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Behind a career-day from freshman James Thompson IV, the Eastern Michigan Eagles cruised to a 108-64 victory over Marygrove College Wednesday at the Convocation Center. It was the first time EMU scored 100-plus points since Dec. 29, 2014 in a 100-42 win over Concordia University (Mich.) and the most points scored by an EMU team since the 2008-09 season when EMU put up 119 against Marygrove, Nov. 14. OXFORD, Ohio -- IPFW went on a 14-2 second half run to come from behind to defeat the Miami RedHawks Tuesday at Millett Hall. The Mastadons connected on 40.9 percent from the field overall and 25 percent (6 of 24) from beyond the arc. Miami was at 36.7 percent from the field overall and 13.3 percent (2 of 15) as it again struggled from distance. The Hilltoppers led 17-15 midway through the first half before embarking on a 19-4 run to close the first period. WKU led by as many as 36 after intermission and shot 53 percent for the game. Frederick Edmond tallied 16 and Justin Johnson added 13 for the Hilltoppers. Braylon Rayson (13) and Austin Stewart (10) to lead Central Michigan scoring. MUNCIE, Ind. – The Bowling Green Falcons wrapped up their regular season by defeating the Ball State Cardinals, 48-10, Tuesday night at Scheumann Stadium. BGSU raced out to a 27-0 halftime lead and never looked back. The Falcons finish the regular season with a 9-3 (7-1 MAC) record, and will now focus on preparing for the Mid-American Conference Championship Game. Ball State finishes the season at 3-9 (2-6 MAC). By MIKE SMITH DEKALB, ILL -- Historical indicators, a host of stats, home field advantage and a huge incentive all pointed to Northern Illinois as a big favorite against the Ohio Bobcats in Tuesday night’s MAC football matchup at Huskie Stadium. None of that mattered on the scoreboard, though, as Ohio established an early lead and went on to knock off NIU, 26-21. |
