The final score, however, wasn’t really . . .
The RedHawks were up 8-5 when point guard Darrian Ringo drew a technical foul at 17:17. As he went to the Miami bench, momentum soon went to Hartford’s side. Jack Hobb’s hit a triple to break a 12-12 tie and UH took the lead for good.
Miami trailed just 21-19 after a McLane three at 10:38, but the Hawks outscored MU 14-1 over the next several minutes to establish a 14-point advantage at the 6:39 mark.
It was a 16-point lead (44-28) at the break. By that time, Hartford already had three players in double figures. Point guard J.R. Lynch led the way with 15 points, including 3 of 5 from long distance. Forwards John Carroll and Jack Hobbs owned 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Overall, UH connected on 53.6 percent from the floor. The Hawks were 6 of 16 (37.5%) on trey attempts and a perfect 8 of 8 from the line.
Miami hit 42.3 percent (11 of 26) from the floor overall, but was just 2 of 9 (22.9%) on 3-point attempts. Both figures would get worse in the second half, despite the return of Ringo to start the final period.
Hartford continued to pull away, reaching a 25-point bulge (65-40) with 6:38 remaining. Miami outscored UH 18-3 the rest of the way, but could only close within 10.
The RedHawks hit 38.3 percent (23 of 60) from the field on the evening. However, they launched 30 threes – most while trying to get back into the game -- and only made five (16.7%). Jalen Adaway was the only other RedHawk besides McLane to reach double figures. Adaway posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Hartford put four in double figures: Carroll (22), Lynch (18 points, 10 rebounds), Jason Dunne (11) and Hobbs (10).
The Hawks hit 42.9 percent (24 of 56) from the field and 30 percent (9 of 30) from beyond the arc. Although, they made just 61.1 percent from the free throw line, they owned an 11-7 edge in made free throws over Miami (7 of 11).
