BY JUSTIN HOLBROCK As defensive end Kendric Smith jogs off the field through a light mist, he pats the helmet of sophomore Tarell Basham who runs to the 32-yard line to take his teammate’s spot. While Smith takes a knee next to his fellow defensive linemen, his breath can be seen in the icy air but is quickly taken away by a harsh fall wind. Although he is exhausted from a long day of practice, Smith is reassured by the fact that whoever rotates in for him will be just as strong and intense as he is on every snap. “We all lean on each other very heavily,” Smith said. “I think the fall off from last year was very small in the second team so anybody could be the one to step up and make a big play.” (CLICK READ MORE TO CONTINUE . . . )

PICTURES AND STORY BY MIKE SMITH OXFORD, OH – If the Ohio Bobcats end up in a bowl game this year, more than a few thanks need to go to a defense that provided a” permission slip” through its work Tuesday night at Yager Stadium . Few might have been singing defensive accolades early as rival Miami rang up 21 unanswered points – albeit one TD off a pick-six – to take a big first half lead. But the Bobcats (6-6, 4-4) got a big special teams play before intermission and the defense pitched a second half shutout as the visitors pulled out a 27-24 victory on Josiah Yazdani’s 28-yard field goal as time expired. It was a second chance for Yazdani, who hooked a potential game-winning 42-yard attempt wide left with 1:47 left. The miss gave Miami (2-10, 2-6 MAC) another chance to close its season with Battle of the Bricks win over rival Ohio. It was 75 yards to the OU goal line, but junior placekicker Kaleb Patterson owned a long of 52 yards. Given the cold weather, the farther inside that distance, the better. The Mid-American Conference on Monday announced its Week 13 Football Players of the Week. The MAC East POTW are: A.J. Ouellette (RB, Ohio); Gabe Martin (LB, Bowling Green); Robert Stein (K, Akron) The MAC West POTW are: Kareem Hunt (RB, Toledo); Donald Celiscar (DB, Western Michigan) and Tyler Wedel (P, Northern Illinois).
Cleveland, Ohio – The Mid-American Conference (MAC) announced today it has issued a public reprimand to four Central Michigan team captains for actions during the pre-game coin toss in last Saturday’s home game vs. Western Michigan. The four Central Michigan captains are wide receiver Titus Davis, linebacker Justin Cherocci, offensive lineman Andy Phillips and defensive tackle Leterrius Walton. The Central Michigan captains refused to shake hands during the coin toss with Western Michigan team captains, in addition the MAC endorses the institution’s decision to remove them from serving as team captains in the future. “The MAC has determined that the actions of the Central Michigan captains, in intentionally failing to shake hands of the captains from Western Michigan during the pre-game coin toss constituted a violation of the Conference sportsmanship policy,” said MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher. “Sportsmanship is among the core values of intercollegiate athletics and a value reinforced by members of the Mid-American Conference. While the pre-game handshake is a simple gesture, it is one that is symbolic of the ethics and traditions of the game. Team captains are expected to demonstrate leadership and have a responsibility to pattern behavior that exemplifies the very best values of the team and institution they represent,” added Steinbrecher. No matter how Tuesday’s Miami RedHawks vs. Ohio Bobcats MAC football contest ends, Andrew Hendrix should be happy about at least one thing – he can go out swinging! Just like other student-athletes playing in their final game, Hendrix wants to walk away as a winner. Leading his team to a win over arch-rival Ohio as an end note to his career and a rebuilding season would make it that much sweeter. The former Moeller High School (Cincinnati) quarterback originally took his talents to Notre Dame. But he saw very limited action for the Irish and the prospects for any kind of significant role in 2014 were beyond slim. When ND offensive coordinator Chuck Martin took the Miami head coaching job after MU’s winless 2013 campaign, Hendrix was one of several Irish players who elected to follow him to Oxford. All three would be be immediately available, albeit for only one season. (CLICK READ MORE TO CONTINUE . . . )
