After trailing by 35 points entering the fourth quarter, Central Michigan fell just one two-point conversion short of pulling out a victory. Cooper’s Rush’s incomplete pass with no time remaining sealed a 49-48 Western Kentucky Hilltoppers win over CMU. It was Rush who gave the Chippewas a chance to win with five touchdown passes in the final quarter. The last followed a Hilltopper punt that left Central Michigan 75 yards away with one second on the game clock. Rush drifted right and lofted a Hail Mary pass that was caught in a crowd by Jessie Kroll at the 29. He briefly broke from the pack heading left. Just as Kroll was about to be tackled, he lateraled to Deon Butler, who did the same. That put the ball in the hands of receiver Titus Davis who turned on the jets heading right for the end zone. He stretched at the last possible moment and hit the pylon with the ball to provide the critical touchdown. (CLICK READ MORE TO CONTINUE . . . ) YPSILANTI, Mich. With record-setting quarterback Rakeem Cato at the helm, the Marshall Thundering Herd scored 17 straight first half points to grab the lead and went on to post a 52-23 victory over Northern Illinois Tuesday in the Boca Raton bowl at Florida International Stadium. Marshall finished 13-1, with its only loss being a 67-66 overtime setback to Western Kentucky Cato, who hails from nearby Miami, capped off his stellar career with another big night. Football analysts and sages frequently allude to the maxim: “You are what your record says you are.” Okay, but the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, who face the Central Michigan Chippewas Wednesday (noon) in the Popeyes Bahamas Bowl, sure seem a lot scarier than 7-5. Just ask a few opposing coaches, like maybe Marshall Thundering Herd head coach Doc Rivers. The Herd had pretty much trampled nearly all comers while reeling off 11 straight wins this season. Western Kentucky came to Huntington for the season finale, and it left with a wild 67-66 overtime victory over hosting Marshall. Winning in Huntington isn’t easy anytime, let along against an undefeated team led by Rakeem Cato. Of course, a scary movie is often a thrilling movie, so let’s take a look at why Western Kentucky is both. With nearly a month to get healthy and prepare, Central Michigan (also 7-5 and with some scary skills) hopes it can give Chippewa nation a happy ending. "Hats off to them. They're very good,” Ohio head coach Saul Phillips said. “I truly believe they have a chance to win this tournament. I think they're good enough. I knew they were a good team coming in, but that doesn't make it OK that we missed out on doing some things that we've got to do better." NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Junior Darrell Bowie scored a team-high 15 points but it wasn’t enough as the Northern Illinois Huskies fell, 91-66, to 16th-ranked Notre Dame on Monday night at Purcell Pavilion. The Fighting Irish shot 58.9 percent (33-of-56) from the floor and made 12 three-pointers in the contest. Senior Aaron Armstead added 13 points, including four three-pointers, and senior Pete Rakocevic chipped in 10 points off the bench for NIU. “(Notre Dame) is a good team,” said NIU head coach Mark Montgomery. “I thought both teams came out and fought, but there is a reason why they are a top-16 team in the country. They are very deep, very unselfish, they are good shooters and they spread you out, which makes them tough to guard. “(Darrell) Bowie is always consistent for us, he had a good night with 15 points and five rebounds, but I thought our bench gave us a lift. Rakocevic and (Aaron) Armstead combined for 23 points and we would take that any night.” (CLICK READ MORE TO CONTINUE . . . )

Two MAC teams get a chance to cap off their seasons with bowl wins this week. Both Northern Illinois and Central Michigan will face high-quality opponents, so it’s a case of high risk/reward. These are potentially a couple of the better matchups among the “non-playoff” bowl games. Northern Illinois vs Marshall, in fact, is the only bowl outside the playoffs to feature two conference champions. The two will square off in the Boca Raton Bowl Tuesday at 6 p.m. ET. Northern Illinois captured its third MAC championship in five years Dec. 5 when it dominated East champ Bowling Green in the title tilt. Marshall won its first Conference USA championship on its home field with a 26-23 victory over Louisiana Tech in the title game. EL PASO, Texas -- Kent State turned in another outstanding defensive performance and a free throw by senior Kris Brewer with 2.9 seconds remaining proved to be the difference in a 53-52 win over North Dakota State in the opening game of the WestStar Bank Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational on Sunday. "I am really proud of the way our guys played today," said head coach Rob Senderoff. "Our guys gutted it out and found a way to win against a pretty good team. The way we play, it's never going to be pretty and tonight certainly wasn't. But if you like watching a pitcher's duel in baseball, you'll like watching us because we play hard.
