"This was a big win for us on the road in a great environment," Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk said. "We lost our swagger in the second half but we got it back in overtime. Marshall is a very good team and this really helps us get ready for conference play."
Senior Jaelan Sanford paced the Rockets with 20 points and sent the game to overtime with a contested leaning three-pointer from the corner with 5.2 seconds remaining in regulation. He was joined in double figures by sophomoreMarreon Jackson (13 pts.), junior Willie Jackson (12 pts.) and freshman AJ Edu (season-high 11 pts.).
Senior Jon Elmore led Marshall with a game-high 21 points.
Toledo led by 21 points early in the second half before seeing the Thundering Herd rally to take the lead with just under six minutes remaining. Marshall led 65-60 with 1:13 remaining before Sanford's layup cut the lead to three with 48 seconds left. Elmore's jumper rimmed out on the next possession to set the stage for Sanford.
Toledo will be idle this week for final exams before returning to action on Saturday, Dec. 15 vs. Middle Tennessee. Tip-off time in Savage Arena is 7:00 p.m.
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST HALF
- Toledo scored the first six points and used an 11-0 run to take a 20-4 advantage just over seven minutes into the game.
- Marshall reduced its deficit to single digits, 20-11, before a Sanford trey and Marreon Jackson layup put UT back up 14 with 7:39 left.
- Luke Knapke picked up his third foul with 6:44 remaining and AJ Edu scored six straight to give UT a 37-20 lead less than three minutes later.
- Sanford and senior Chris Darrington ended the half with a pair of baskets to give UT a 41-23 cushion at intermission.
- Toledo limited the Thundering Herd to a 35.7 FG% and just one three-point field goal in 11 attempts. The Rockets shot 45.5 percent and were 5-of-14 behind the arc in the opening 20 minutes.
- Willie Jackson's two free throws put the Rockets up 20 points, 48-28, with 17:48 to play.
- Back-to-back treys from Jon Elmore and an Iran Bennett layup cut Toledo' s lead in half, 48-38, with 15:17 remaining.
- Two more Elmore three-pointers and C.J. Burks' layin evened the score at 53-53 at the 7:50 mark.
- Marshall took its first lead, 57-55, just over two minutes later on Rondale Watson's layup.
- Back-to-back baskets by Burks put the Herd up 65-60 with 1:13 to play.
- Sanford scored the Rockets' last 10 points in regulation, including the final five, to send the game to overtime.
- Toledo shot just 23.3 percent and 3-of-15 from downtown in the second half.
- Toledo's 9-1 start is its best since winning 12 in a row to start the 2013-14 season.
- Toledo is 9-2 in games decided by five points or less since the start of last season.
- Four or more Rockets have scored in double digits in nine of 10 games.
- UT's 36.1 field-goal percentage was a season low, just below its 36.2 mark at Wright State.
- The Rockets' 68.4 FT% (13-of-19) was their second-lowest performance from the line this season.
- Jaelan Sanford has connected for a three-point field goal in every game this season. Sanford also scored in double digits for the ninth time in 10 games and hit 4-of-9 three-point attempts.
- Nate Navigato connected for three treys and has three or more three-pointers in eight of 10 games.
- Marreon Jackson tied his season high for a second-straight game with 13 points. He also finished with three assists and just one turnover.
- AJ Edu tallied a season-high 11 points to go along six boards, two assists and two blocks in 19 minutes.
