Bobcats struggle in loss to Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Ohio (4-4) suffered an 87-62 loss to Big Ten Conference foe Maryland (8-3) on Thursday at Xfinity Center.
The hosts took control early, jumping out to a 15-2 lead by the 14:23 mark. Maryland carried that 13-point bulge into halftime (41-28).
The Terrapins were .  .  . 

. . . coming off an overtime win over Illinois – a game in which they blew a 22-point lead before pulling out the victory. They made sure nothing similar would happen against the Bobcats. Feeding 7-1 Michal Cekovsky, who made every shot he took, Maryland dominated the boards and outscored Ohio by 12 in the second stanza.

The Bobcats shot just 35 percent (21-of-60) from the field -- including 25 percent (5-of-20) from three-point range -- while the Terrapins made 48.5 percent of their shots and dominated the box score in rebounds (49-29) and points in the paint (44-26).

Senior guard Mike Laster led Ohio with a 14-point effort, going 5-of-12 from the field -- including 3-of-6 from three-point range -- en route to finishing in double figures for the fifth game in a row. He also tallied four rebounds, two assists and a steal in 33 minutes.

Graduate forward Kevin Mickle scored nine points in 24 minutes off of the bench and also logged three rebounds, a block and a steal. Junior forward Doug Taylor contributed eight points, a team-high six rebounds, a block and a steal over 22 minutes.

Freshman guard Teyvion Kirk finished with eight points, two rebounds an assist and a steal in 20 minutes. Redshirt sophomore guard James Gollon totaled seven points five rebounds, an a assist and a block in 24 minutes off of the bench.

After missing the first seven games of the 2017-18 season with a lower leg injury, sophomore forward Jason Carter posted six points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals in 16 minutes of action off of the bench.

Sophomore guard Kevin Huerter made six field goals -- including four treys -- to lead the way for Maryland with a game-high 17 points. He also added six rebounds, an assist, a block and a steal over 32 minutes of work.

Senior center Michal Cekovsky went a perfect 6-of-6 from the field and 3-of-3 from the free throw line to tally 15 points. He also grabbed eight boards and tallied a game-high two blocks in 19 minutes.

Sophomore guard Anthony Cowan Jr. totaled 12 points thanks in large part to going a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. He also recorded eight boards to tie Cekovsky for a game high and chipped in a game-high seven assists as well as a steal in 34 minutes.

Sophomore forward Justin Jackson totaled 10 points, five rebounds, an assist and a steal in 19 minutes of work off of the bench.

Ohio returns to the Convocation Center on Sunday (Dec. 10) to host Western Kentucky in a 2 p.m. ET matchup.
