OXFORD, Oh -- Freshman forward Jason Carter got his first taste of the Ohio vs. Miami basketball rivalry Tuesday night, and it appears the menu agreed with him. Carter helped the Bobcats grab an early lead and he went on to score a career-high 25 points to lead Ohio past Miami, 79-62, at Millett Hall.
Joining Carter, who also had 11 rebounds, in double figures were
Jaaron Simmons and Mike Laster.

Miami also had three players in double figures, although none of them had the kind of nights Carter and Simmons enjoyed. Junior forward Logan McLane tallied 11 points, followed by Jake Wright and Marcus Weathers with 10 apiece.
Ohio, which lost 6-8 senior standout Antonio Campbell for the season back in mid-January, has been adjusting since that time and is showing signs of putting things together as tournament time approaches. With Tuesday’s victory, Ohio (18-8, 10-5 MAC) has won four straight and five of its last six.

The RedHawks regrouped and went on a 10-1 run to forge the second of three ties in the game at 14-all with 11:08 remaining in the first period. Miami then grabbed its only lead of the evening at 18-17 on a layup by freshman Darius Harper.
A minute later, Gavin Block hit a jumper and Rodney Culver followed with a triple to begin a 15-2 Ohio burst. That gave the ‘Cats their first double digit lead, 32-20. They were up by 13 when Jordan Dartis pulled down a Miami miss with four ticks left. He got it to mid-court before launching a long shot that just beat the buzzer and found its target to give the visitors a 38-22 halftime advantage.

The RedHawks connected on just 9 of 28 (32.1%) overall and missed all seven 3-point tries over the first 20 minutes. Ohio was good on 53.8 percent (14 of 26) from the floor and hit 4 of 10 trey attempts.
Better second half shooting allowed Miami to make a run at the visitors. The RedHawks were trailing 44-27 after Gavin Block’s layup at 16:22. MU then ran off 14 unanswered points to pull within three at 44-41. The stretch included two treys by Marcus Weathers, as well as a triple and two-point bucket by Jake Wright. Miami made 5 of 9 attempts from beyond the arc in the final period.
Ohio, however, had a few threes of its own left and used several in a 16-0 run that effectively put the game away. Block started the onslaught with a triple, After a Carter layup and his own trey, Laster followed with a three and layup. Simmons finished the run with an and-one three-point play that put the Bobcats up 60-41. The closest Miami could get after that was 11 points.
