By EVAN MEYER AKRON, OHIO – Marshall University athletic teams are called ‘The Thundering Herd’ and for the first four weeks of this 2014 College Football season, MU has lived up to that moniker. Saturday, the Herd rumbled once again while dominating the Akron Zips, 48-14, at InfoCision Stadium. Marshall (4-0) is off to its best start since 1999. The Herd have won nine of their last 10 games, including three against Mid-American Conference opposition, dating back to last season. “We challenged out kids.” MU head coach Doc Holliday said after the game. “We challenged them on being a physical and competitive football team as they were a week ago (a 41-14 home win over Ohio), and I thought we did that today." Akron (1-2) has lost two straight after opening the campaign with a 41-0 shutout of Howard. In addition, UA saw its four-game home winning streak come to a crashing end. By MIKE SMITH Like every coach, Chuck Martin’s first goal is to win each week. However, another Martin goal for his RedHawks this year is to make sure opponents leave knowing they’ve been in a 60-minute fight. The RedHawks failed to post a win Saturday as Cincinnati posted a 31-24 victory at Riverfront Stadium, but the Bearcats were forced to go toe-to-toe against their rival foe. Miami had a golden opportunity to score a tying touchdown late in the fourth quarter when quarterback Andrew Hendrix scrambled 11 yards up the middle to pick up a first down at the Bearcats one-yard line. However, UC’s defense stopped a short run attempt for a loss and then twice sacked Hendrix. Kaleb Patterson’s 30-yard field goal attempt was wide left. Cincinnati took over and ran out the clock. TOLEDO, OH – In a contest delayed nearly three hours due to severe weather, Toledo outlasted Ball State, 34-23, at the Glass Bowl Saturday night. Ball State (1-3, 0-1 MAC) was led by senior running back Jahwan Edwards, who rushed for 125 yards on 21 attempts. Sophomore Kareem Hunt rushed for 142 yards and a touchdown on just 12 carries to pace a balanced Rocket offense that gained 318 of its 470 yards of total offense on the ground. Hunt left the game in the second quarter with a foot injury following a 43-yard run and did not return. It was Hunt’s fourth consecutive 100-yard outing in as many tries this season. Justin Holbrock ATHENS, OH -- In their first home game of the season, the Ohio Bobcats (2-2, 1-0) held off the Idaho Vandals (0-3, 0-1) 36-24 on Saturday night thanks in large part the defensive play of freshman linebacker Quentin Poling and an impressive rushing performance by freshman running back A.J. Ouellette. After failing to have a running back gain at least 50 yards rushing in the past two weeks, the Bobcats found an unlikely answer in Ouellette. Against the Vandals, Ouellette scored two touchdowns and picked up 130 yards rushing on 27 carries. (CLICK READ MORE TO CONTINUE . . . )
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - Kansas used two fourth quarter touchdowns to pull away for a 24-10 victory over Central Michigan on Saturday. Kansas QB Montell Cozart finished with 226 yards passing for the Jayhawks (2-1), a big part coming on a toss to McCay with 13:23 remaining. The third-down throw was caught underneath the coverage. McCay slipped the grasp of safety Dennis Nalor and scooted untouched the rest of the way for what proved to be the game winner. Tony Pierson ran 74 yards for a touchdown on the game's opening play, and Cozart added a 30-yard touchdown pass to Corey Avery with about 2 minutes remaining to seal the win. Martez Walker had 56 yards rushing and a touchdown for the Chippewas (2-2), who were trying to start 2-0 on the road for the first time since 1985. They won at Purdue on Sept. 6. FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas Razorbacks were too much for the Northern Illinois University Huskies to handle Saturday night in Fayetteville, Ark. as NIU fell to 3-1 on the season after dropping a 52-14 decision at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium. Arkansas’ special teams and defense accounted for its first two touchdowns, and while the Huskie defense held the Razorbacks below their per rush average, the Huskies could not hold up for the 34:38 that Arkansas held the ball as UA effectively mixed the run and the pass. With the loss, NIU saw its nation-leading 17-game road winning streak come to an end. It was also Northern’s first regular season loss in 27 games (the 2012 season opener versus Iowa). “I give [Arkansas] a ton of credit,” Carey said. “They are a fine football team. They came out, made a big play in the kicking game; they didn’t turn the ball over and made plays. We didn’t. We’ll go back, learn from this, watch the film and make good use of the bye week.” (CLICK READ MORE TO CONTINUE . . . )

BUFFALO, NY – There were a lot of questions surrounding the play of the Buffalo Bulls defense over the past few games. The Bulls defense answered their critics Saturday afternoon with a dominant 36-7 victory over Norfolk State at UB Stadium. The Bulls held Norfolk State to 215 yards of total offense, including 99 passing yards on just three completions. The three completions were the fewest by an opponent in UB's FBS era (since 1999). By MIKE SMITH There may have been over 100,000 people on hand last week as the Miami RedHawks took on Michigan at the Big House, but this week’s matchup against Cincinnati doesn’t figure to be a whole lot easier. In fact, based on UC quarterback Gunner Kiel’s debut, at least some parts of the RedHawks challenge may be even tougher. Kiel, nephew of former Notre Dame and NFL quarterback Blair Kiel, was a very highly-rated prep player who landed at Cincinnati after a somewhat zig-zag route that passed through Notre Dame. Ironically, that is from where Miami’s new head coach, Chuck Martin, and several of his players, have come. The short list includes senior Andrew Hendrix (himself a former Cincinnati area prep star at Moeller H.S.). (CLICK READ MORE TO CONTINUE . . . )
For the majority of Mid-American Conference football programs, this is the last week of non-conference action. All 13 teams play on Saturday, and there is one MAC vs. MAC matchup. Let’s start Week Four with a look at that game; other previews follow. Click Read More to continue. Ball State (1-2, 0-0 MAC) at Toledo Glass Bowl 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, ESPN3 Last year, this matchup was a considered a huge game in the MAC West race. Each team had significant personnel losses entering 2014, but both have the potential to fare well in the coming weeks. For now, both teams are on two-game losing streaks. Ball State’s loss to Iowa 17-13, especially after holding a 13-10 lead until a Hawkeye field goal with one minute left was one thing. Losing at home last week to Indiana State was another. Two Cardinal field goals in the third quarter tied the game, but Kyani Harri’s 28-yard TD pass to Mike Perish with 3:50 left proved to be the game winner in a 27-20 ISU decision. After a week off, the Blue and Gold return to action with a matchup against the Marshall Thundering Herd at InfoCision Stadium. The visitors from West Virginia are off to an emphatic 3-0 start that includes victories over Mid-American Conference foes Miami and Ohio University. (CLICK READ MORE TO CONTINUE . . . )
