Final play field goal lifts EMU to upset win

West Lafayette, IN – Freshman Chad Rylan kicked a 24=yard field goal as time expired to send Eastern Michigan past Purdue, 20-19, Saturday at Ross-Ade Stadium.
It was the second of two field goals for Rylan, who also converted a pair of extra points.
Purdue, meanwhile, missed an extra point following a touchdown with 59 seconds left in the second quarter.
Eastern quickly drove back down the field, starting with a 16-yard run by Shaq Vann and three Tyler Wiegens completions to reach the Purdue five with six seconds left. After a penalty, Rylan converted his 27-yard try to pull EMU within two at 12-10 going into halftime
Neither team scored in the third quarter, but Brek Turner moved the Eagles in front with a 9-yard TD run midway through the final frame.
Purdue answered quickly as D.J. Knox ripped off a 45-yard run at 6:41. That left the hosts in front 19-17, and Purdue came up with an interception on EMU’s next possession. Eastern Michigan’s defense, however, stymied the Boilermakers, who could not get a first down. Spencer Evan’s 38-yard field goal try missed.
The Eagles took over with 4:51 remaining and used 15 plays to set up Ryland’s short field goal.
Wiegers completed 20 of 28 passes for 312 yards and a touchdown with one interception. Vann led EMU rushers with seven carries for 44 yards as the Eagles totaled 69 yards on the ground.
Blake Banham, Arther Jackson III and Mathew Sexton combined for 15 catches, 264 yards and a score.
