KENT, OHIO – Freshman Andrew Clair rushed for 111 yards and a touchdown as Bowling Green picked up its second win of the 2017 season with a 44-16 win over the Kent State Golden Flashes Tuesday night at Dix Stadium.
The Falcons 17-point first quarter put Bowling Green (2-7, 2-3 MAC) in control early, and KSU never . . .
Kent State (2-7, 1-4 MAC) suffered its second straight loss and seventh in the last eight games while falling to 1-3 at home.
Just three plays into Kent State’s succeeding drive, the BGSU defense came with a big play by intercepting Flashes QB George Bollas. Senior CB Cameron Jefferies made the theft and took the ball back to KSU’s 22. When the Flashes defense stiffened, Jake Suder came on to make the first of his three field goals on the evening.
On the Falcons third possession, Doege took the offense 90 yards in just eight plays thanks to the running of Clair, who gained 77 yards in the opening 30 minutes. Doege completed the drive with his lone touchdown pass of the game, connecting with junior WR Darin Guyton in the right corner of the end zone from 36 yards out to make the score 17-0.
KSU finally put together a long drive in the second period. Thanks to the running of Bollas, Kent State engineered 14-play 75-yard drive, converting two fourth down situations along the way. He capped the drive with a 22-yard touchdown run off the quarterback draw. However PK Shane Hynes missed the extra point, leaving the score at 17-6.
Late in the period, Both Suder and Hynes connected on field goals goals of 29 and 30 yards, respectively, to make the score 20-9 in favor of the Falcons at halftime.
Bowling Green pulled away in the third quarter.
On their first possession of the period, they went 80-yards in 14 plays, with Doege scoring the touchdown on a quarterback sneak from one yard out. Then later in the period, Josh Cleveland tallied on a five-yard touchdown around the left side to increase the Orange and Brown lead to 34-9.
KSU’s final touchdown was a three-yard scamper by Will Matthews in the fourth period, while BGSU’s final points came on a Doege’s second touchdown pass of the game, a seven-yarder to fifth year senior WR Teo Redding. Suder closed out the scoring with this third field goal -- a 28-yarder.
Statistically, BGSU was led by Doege. Returning to the starting lineup, he threw only 18 times but completed 14 for 174 yards and two scores. Redding led the receivers with five catches for 81 yards. He also had a spectacular catch for a touchdown called back on a holding penalty in the third quarter.
The defense held KSU to just 284 offensive yards a season high, forced four turnovers (three interceptions and a fumble). They were led on the stat sheet by Fred Garth who had 11 total tackles (seven solo).
On the night, Bowling Green’s offense totaled 401 total yards. The Falcons were a perfect seven-for-seven in the red zone and scored the most points since they registered 44 in the 2015 season finale at Ball State.
For the Flashes, they used both Bollas and freshman Dustin Crum. Both led the offense to scores. Bollas went 16-of-35 through the air for 140 yards with three interceptions and was sacked four times. He also led KSU in rushing with 84 yards and a score.
Sophomore RB Justin Rankin led all receivers in the contest with nine catches for 60 yards.
The KSU defense was led by junior LB Jim Jones. Kent State’s leading tackler coming into the game matched Garth with 11 total stops (eight solo), along with a pair of sacks.
