CLARKESVILLE, TN -- Miami RedHawks head coach Jack Owens can’t wait to get back to campus in Oxford, and he’s got some really good reasons. Topping the list is a chance to work on things with his young squad, which fell to Austin Peay 86-61 Sunday at the Winfield Dunn Center.

It was the RedHawks third . . .

. . . straight loss after starting 3-0. Only one of those games was played at home, and that was a win over Wright State back on Nov. 14. Since then,. MU has been to Jamaica for a pair, Tulane and Austin Peay.

The latest was an unmitigated blowout as Austin Peay led 72-39 with 9:11 remaining in the second half.

“We need practice,” Owens said. “We need to get some days where we’re not traveling so we can work some things out.”
Whatever part Miami did, or did not, have in it, the Governors were on target. They hit 60 percent from both the field and from beyond the arc.

It was the latter that helped Austin Peay distancing itself early. The hosts were up 12-8 before knocking down five straight 3-pointers in five possessions. A-P would expand its double-digit lead, enjoying a 51-29 lead at the break.

Miami fueled the Govenors’ offense with 21 turnovers on the night, and Austin Peay cruised through the second half. The Governors are now 3-3, with road losses to Vanderbilt and Virginia, as well as an overtime setback to UNC Ashville.

Miami connected on 46.7 percent of its shots from the field. While normally not a bad percentage, the 21 made-field goals were 12 less than Austin Peay.

The RedHawks were also 5 of 16 from distance, while A-P went 9 for 15. The Governors had a 30-26 rebounding advantage.

Freshman guard Dayton Gumm lead all scorers with 23 points. He was 9 of 13 from the floor and 3 of 4 on threes.

Joining him in double figures for the Governors were senior forward Averyl Ugba (13), junior forward Zach Glotta (13), freshman guard Terry Taylor (12) and junior guard Steve Harris (11).

Miami was led by freshman guard Nike Sibande with 16 points, to follow up his 21-point performance Wednesday at Tulane. Also reaching double figures were freshman Isaiah Coleman-Landis (14) and freshman guard Jalen Ataway (13).

Miami returns to action Wednesday for a home game against Midway before heading out again for games at Western Illinois and Missouri.

Seven of MU’s first eight games are on the road, and the RedHawks play just four home games in a 13-game non-conference slate.
