AKRON, OHIO- Just a little over 20 days after being named head men’s basketball coach at the University of Akron, John Groce has put his stamp on the program, announcing the signing of two players who will be eligible for the 2017-18 season.

AKRON, OHIO- Just a little over 20 days after being named head men’s basketball coach at the University of Akron, John Groce has put his stamp on the program, announcing the signing of two players who will be eligible for the 2017-18 season.
The first is . . .
. . . Torrey Patton a 6-4 guard from Trotwood-Madison High School in Dayton. “We are excited about adding Torrey to the 2017-18 class," Groce said. "Torrey adds size and length to our backcourt. He plays with great pace and handles the ball well, which allows him to impact the game in multiple ways. He has a tremendous upside to his game, with the determination to continuously improve every year."
Patton was the Ohio Division II co-player of the year in 2015-16, leading the Rams to a 26-3 record. They fell in the state semi-finals to eventual State Champion Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary, 62-60.
The Zips second addition is Mark Kostelnac a 6-11 center from Cleveland. He played four years at Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School, leading the Vikings in points, rebounds, and blocked shots his senior season.
On the inking of Kostelnac, Groce said “We knew he would be a great fit for our program.”
Last season, Kostelnac went to the IMG Academy in Florida and led the IMG National Post-grad team, averaging 18 points, 14 rebounds, and four blocked shots per contest.
UA opens play in November at home against Cleveland State in the Northeast Ohio Coaches vs. Cancer tournament.
