CHICAGO -- Four Huskie players scored in double figures, led by sophomore Eugene German’s 26 points, as Northern Illinois posted a 95-77 win against Chicago State Saturday at Jones Convention Center.

Junior Levi Bradley scored . . .

. . . 14 points, freshman Rod Henry-Hayes added 13 points and sophomore Justin Thomas chipped in 11 as the Huskies led wire-to-wire.

NIU (5-3) shot 52.3 percent (34-of-65) in the contest, including 50 percent (11-of-22) from behind the three-point line, and dished out 22 assists with just nine turnovers; German led NIU with six assists, while Thomas added five with zero turnovers.

“It was a good bounce back after a tough loss to Milwaukee,” said NIU head coach Mark Montgomery. “We came in last night and had a very focused practice, went through our morning routine (today) and jumped out on them, shooting an unbelievable percentage in the first half. A lot of guys gave us quality minutes and we did some good things today.”

NIU raced out to a quick 8-0 lead in the opening three minutes of the contest. Bradley opened the scoring with a bucket, Thomas added a triple before a pair of free throws from German and a free throw by sophomore Noah McCarty  gave the Huskies the early eight-point advantage.

McCarty finished with six points, five rebounds and three assists.

A 7-2 burst by Chicago State trimmed the NIU lead to just three, 12-9, with just under 14 minutes to play in the opening half, but the Huskies responded with the next five as freshman Owen Hamilton made a pair from the free-throw line and junior Dante Thorpe added a triple from the corner.

Thorpe scored nine points while dishing out four rebounds.

McCarty opened an 8-0 burst for the Huskies with a layup, German and Bradley each added trifectas as NIU took a 14-point lead, 28-14, just past the midway point of the opening 20 minutes.

Three more points from McCarty fueled a seven-point spurt for the Huskies as NIU pushed its lead to 40-23.

NIU closed the first half with the final seven points, five from Thomas and a pair from freshman Gairges as the Huskies took a 53-34 lead into the intermission.

German led all scorers with 16 points in the opening 20 minutes as the Huskies shot 57.6 percent (19-of-33) from the field, including 8-of-12 (66.7 percent) from behind the three-point line, with 14 assists.
Fred Sims Jr. led Chicago State with 10 first half points.

The NIU lead grew to 22, 64-42, less than four minutes into the second half, but Chicago State trimmed the Huskie advantage back to just 15 with a 10-3 run that cut the NIU lead to 69-54.

With NIU up by 16, a 9-0 run pushed the Huskie advantage to 91-66 with five minutes remaining as the Huskies cruised to an 18-point victory.

Sims led Chicago State (2-9) with 19 points, Jelani Pruitt added 12 points and a game-high eight rebounds while Rob Shaw chipped in 10 points.

NIU will be back in action on Monday night, Dec. 4, when the Huskies travel to Ames, Iowa, to meet Iowa State. Game time against the Cyclones is slated for 8 p.m. CT and will be televised on ESPNU.
