"It's good to get a win in our first home game of the year," said head coach Rob Senderoff. "I don't think it was our best performance of the season, and I don't think it will be our best. These games are sometimes hard to play when you are facing a team you know you are significantly better than. Overall we'll take the win, figure out some things we need to get better at on film and get ready for Sunday."
The Flashes took care of business early and controlled the game from bell to bell. Kent State opened with a 15-3 run. The Flashes took their first 20-point lead with 5:39 left in the first half at 35-15. The Trailblazers cut it down to 17, KSU ended the period on an 11-0 run to hold a 47-19 halftime advantage.
Kent State created its first 30 point lead by scoring back-to-back buckets in the paint to start the second half. Kent State would lead by at least 30 for the remainder of the game and went up by 41 with 12:36 left in the game. Ohio Christian battled the deficit down to 37 with a five-point spurt, but Kent State would work back to a 45-point lead with 30 seconds remaining.
The Flashes finished the game shooting 44.4 percent (32-for-72) from the floor and 38.6 percent (10-for-26) from 3-point range. Ohio Christian finished at 31.5 percent and were held to 7-for-31 shooting in the first half. Kent State outrebounded Ohio Christian 48-27 with 16 offensive boards. The Flashes only committed six turnovers to the Trailblazers' 18.
Danny Pippen rounded out the four Flashes in double figures with 10 points and three blocks. Taishaun Johnson had nine points while BJ Duling logged eight points and five rebounds. Jalen Avery, Akiean Frederick and Desmond Ridenour all finished with seven points. Frederick also had nine rebounds, while Ridenour was one short of his career high with six.
The Flashes will move on to the Savannah Invitational, with the first two games taking place in the M.A.C. Center. Kent State will start with Mississippi Valley State Sunday at 3 p.m.
