Offensive Player of the Week: Buffalo WR Anthony Johnson
Buffalo junior Anthony Johnson (Rock Hill, S.C.) had six catches for 155 yards and two touchdowns in a 31-24 win over Ohio on Nov. 24. The junior receiver averaged nearly 26 yards per catch. Johnson had touchdown grabs of 31 and 54 yards to bring his season total to 14. The 14 touchdown receptions are a single-season school record.
Defensive Player of the Week: Akron LB Ulysees Gilbert III
Akron junior linebacker Ulysees Gilbert III (Ocala, Fla.) made his first career fumble recovery as time expired in the second quarter, returning it 40 yards for a touchdown in a 24-14 win over Kent State on Nov. 21. The touchdown gave Akron a 24-7 halftime lead. The touchdown was the linebacker’s fourth of his career as he has two from interception returns and one from a punt return. Gilbert finished the game with a game-high 14 tackles, three tackles for loss, one sack for three-yards, the fumble recovery and touchdown, and a hurry.
Special Teams Player of the Week: Akron P/K Nick Gasser
Akron junior punter/kicker Nick Gasser (Liberty Township, Ohio) made a 45-yard field goal in a 24-14 win over Kent State on Nov. 21. It was his second field goal and his longest to date. His 45.9 punting average and five punts inside the 20 were both career highs. Gasser also kicked off four times for 225 yards (56.2 average) and punted eight times for 367 yards (45.9 average). Two of Gasser’s kickoffs and three punts landed within around the five-yard line, giving the Golden Flashes more than a 90-yard trek to the end zone.
Offensive Player of the Week: Toledo QB Logan Woodside
Toledo senior quarterback Logan Woodside (Frankfort, Ky.) completed 19-of-29 passes for 300 yards and two touchdowns in a 37-10 win over Western Michigan on Nov. 24. Woodside’s career passing yards total are now 10,083 career yards, which ranks 14th in MAC history and the first Toledo quarterback to throw for over 10,000 career yards.
Defensive Player of the Week: Northern Illinois LB Jawuan Johnson
Northern Illinois junior linebacker Jawuan Johnson (East St. Louis, Ill.) collected six solo tackles, one sack for nine-yards, one forced fumble and his fifth interception of the year, which he returned for a 37-yard touchdown, in a 31-24 loss at Central Michigan on Nov. 24. Johnson’s team-leading fifth interception, which ranks tied for seventh in the nation, came on the first series of the game as he stepped in front of a Shane Morris pass and took it back all the way for a 7-0 Huskies’ lead. It was his second interception return for a touchdown of the season. The sack and forced fumble came on the same play and resulted in not just a nine-yard loss but a total of 31 yards lost as Central Michigan went from the NIU 49-yard line to its own 20 on the play.
Special Teams Player of the Week: Toledo K Jameson Vest
Toledo junior kicker Jameson Vest (Peachtree City, Ga.) made all three of his field goal attempts in a 37-10 win over Western Michigan on Nov. 24. Vest made field goals from 33, 35 and 40 yards and was 4-of-4 on PATs. He also averaged 61.0 yards in eight kickoffs.
