KENT, Ohio- After seeing a 21-point lead dwindle in the second half, Kent State (7-3, 4-2 MAC) used some clutch free throw shooting and a key defensive stop to hold off Buffalo, 84-81, at the M.A.C. Center on Tuesday night.

"We didn't shoot well in the first half, but we turned it around when our shots started falling. When we move the ball and play as unselfish as we do, we are a talented offensive team. Turnovers, free throws pave way for MU win
By MIKE SMITH
OXFORD, OH -- Coming off a stinging loss at Ohio, the Miami RedHawks halted Ball State's momentum Tuesday with an 81-71 victory at Millett Hall.
The Cardinals drilled East-leading Bowling Green, along with Northern Illinois last week, but they committed 18 turnovers against MU. That helped the RedHawks, who had just eight turnovers, enjoy a 25-6 advantage in points off turnovers. Miami also shook off some early free throw misses to eventually hit 27-of-38 charity tosses. That more than offset Ball State's "perfect" 25-of-25 production at the line.
Miami's James Beck recorded a double double with 17 points and 11 boards, while Dalonte Brown also tallied 17 points. Mekhi Lairy (12) and Isaiah Coleman-Lands (10) also reached double figures.
K.J. Walton and Ishmael El-Amin shared team-high honors for Ball State with 17 apiece.
Ball State grabbed an early lead and stayed in front throughout the first half. Despite leading by seven on several occasions, however, the Cardinals could not shake MU. It was a mere 36-35 BSU advantage at the break, and the lead wavered back and forth over the first seven minutes after play resumed.
Miami finally moved in front to stay after a pair of free throws by Coleman-Lands at 12:10. Like the Cardinals in the first half, MU could not pull away. However, it did fight off several Ball State challenges. BSU pulled within one point five more times, with the last (64-63) coming at 3:05.
Brown's basket inside at 2:15 started a 10-2 RedHawk run that sealed the verdict in Miami's favor.
NOTES:
>> Miami hit just one more field goal and both teams knocked down eight triples.
>> Ball State had one more rebound (34-33). However, MU held the edge on points-in-the-paint (24-22), second chance points (24-3), fast break points (12-0) and points off the bench (33-19)
