The Falcons (9-8, 2-5 MAC) opened the game on a 6-0 run as the Zips (11-5, 4-2 MAC) struggled make a shot in the first two minutes of play, missing the mark on their first four shots. Akron was down as many as seven points, 13-6, when Trimble buried his first 3-point field goal of the evening. He drained two more trifectas, bringing the Zips within one point, 16-15, and Akron followed with five consecutive free throws, three from Trimble, to take the lead, 20-18, a lead the Zips never relinquished.
Trimble closed out the half with three additional long distance shots, shooting 6-of-10 from deep and scoring 21 of the Zips' 46 first-half points. Akron led 46-34 at the break.
Trimble added four 3-pointers in the second half, finishing the game with a sizzling 10-of-14 for 71.4 percent shooting from deep and a perfect 3-of-3 from the free throw line.
Three other Zips reached double figures in scoring as sophomore wing Ali Ali scored 15 points with three assists and junior guard Xavier Castaneda added 14 points and a team-best six assists, while sophomore guard Greg Tribble tallied 11 points. Sophomore forward Enrique Freeman and freshman center Aziz Bandaogo led the squad on the glass with seven rebounds apiece despite the Falcons owning a 42-32 advantage on the glass.
Daeqwon Plowden led the Falcons in scoring with 20 points and Myron Gordon added 12 points. Joseph Fulcher was one off a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds.
Bowling Green entered the game averaging a league-best 83.9 points per game, but the Akron defense limited the home team to shooting just 35.8 percent from the field (24-of-67) and only five 3-point field goals. That was 4.3 shy of the Falcons average. The Zips caused 13 turnovers with eight steals.
