BOWLING GREEN, OH -- The Falcons led by nine with 6:34 to go, but Akron rallied for a three-point win in this year's Mid-American Conference opener.
Akron (8-5, 1-0 MAC) tied the contest at 65-all on a Shammah Scott trey at 2:15. Isaiah Gray put the Zips in front with his own triple at 1:10 and UA held off Bowling Green (5-8, 0-1 MAC) down the stretch.
Sharron Young scored 17 points in 18 minutes off the bench to lead UA. Scott (11) and Gray (10) also reached double figures.
Trey Thomas made 7-of-11 shots from the field while scoring a game-high 19 points for BGSU. Derrick Butler (15), Marcus Johnson (14) and Javontae Campbell (11) combined for 40 Falcon points.
Akron won despite going 7-of-9 at the line, while BGSU hit 14-of-21 opportunities.
