ATHENS, OH -- Despite missing a pair of key contributors, Ohio (12-7, 3-4 MAC) battled its way to a 61-59 win over Kent State (12-7, 3-4 MAC) Friday at the Convocation Center.
The victory broke a two-game losing streak for Ohio, which had previously won six straight. The Flashes absorbed their third loss in the last four contests.
Ohio was missing its leading scorer -- AJ Clayton -- and Aidan Hadaway. However, AJ Brown and Jackson Paveletzke tallied 15 points apiece to lead the Bobcats past KSU in a tight game that included 16 lead changes and seven ties.
It was Paveletzke who put Ohio in front one final time when he hit a triple at 2:18.
A Flashes free throw at 1:56 pulled the visitors with one (59-58), but Paveletzke knocked down two charity tosses with1:08 remaining.
Kent State had a chance to tie the game when Ohio was whistled for fouling a 3-point shooter at 00:50. However, Marquis Hornbeck made just one of his three freebie tosses.
Kent State recorded four more field goals on the night, but the Flashes shot 56 percent (14-of-25) from the line and 15.8 percent (3-of-19) from beyond the arc.
Ohic was just 5-of-18 (27.8%) on threes but hit 22-of-28 free throws (78.6%).
VonCameron Davis was the only Kent State starter in double figures. He shared team-high scoring honors with Cli'Ron Hornbeak (13 apiece)
BOWLING GREEN, OH -- Visiting Toledo (11-8, 5-2 MAC) knocked down 12-of-24 3-point attempts and had five more field goals as the Rockets defeated Bowling Green (7-12, 2-5 MAC) 84-71 Tuesday at the Stroh Center.
Sam Lewis' triple at 2:18 put UT in front (38-36) for good, and Toledo took a 43-38 lead to intermission.
The Rockets expanded their lead to 12 points early in the second half. Bowling Green managed to pull within five with 8:57 to go but UT finished with a 13-point advantage.
Sonny Wilson, who connected on 7-of-9 from the field, and Isaiah Adams paced the Rockets with 18 apiece. Lewis (14) and Bryce Ford (13) also reached double figures.
Bowling Green senior forward Marcus Johnson led all scorers with 28 points. points, while Jamal Fox registered a double-double of 10 points with 13 rebounds. Trey Thomas chipped in 13 points.
The Falcons had a 34-28 edge on points in the paint, but Toledo's bench outscored the hosts bench 14-6.
