DeKALB, IL -- Chansey Willis Jr. scored 17 points to lead Western Michigan (11-18, 8-8 MAC) to a 74-70 win over Northern Illinois Saturday at the NIU Convocation Center.
It was the fourth win in five games for WMU, which is battling to remain among eight qualifiers for the upcoming MAC tournament. The Broncos are now tied for sixth with two games remaining. Northern Illinois, meanwhile, dropped its 10th straight game.
Western Michigan led 43-34 at intermission. NIU fought back and took a 56-55 lead with 11:31 to play. However, Markhi Strickland's triple at 11:09 put the Broncos in front for good. Owen Lobsinger's two free throws with six seconds left sealed the win for WMU.
Joining Willis in double figures were Stickland (14), Lobsinger (12) and Donovan Williams (10).
Quentin Jones topped the Huskies with 25 points. Tsvet Sotirov added 10.
Northern Illinois made just 4 of 11 at the line, while WMU hit 11 of 18 free throws.
BOWLING GREEN, OH -- Javontae Campbell scored a game-high 26 points to lead Bowling Green past Ball State 61-52 Saturday at the Stoh Center.
With the win, BGSU drew even with BSU in the MAC standings with two games to play. Both are tied for the eighth - and final -- spot in the upcoming MAC. Ball State won the first meeting back on Jan. 11.
The Cardinals were up by one with 18:54 left to play. Two Campbell free throws at the other end put Bowling Green in front for good. BSU was still within two (45-43) with 8:46 remaining, but the Falcons pulled away for the win.
Marcus Johnson (15) joined Campbell in double figures for BGSU. Mickey Pearson Jr. (15) and Payton Sparks (14) led Cardinal scorers.
BUFFALO, NY -- The Bulls ended a four-game slide as Buffalo (9-20, 4-12 MAC) a reeling Toledo (16-13, 9-7 MAC) team 87-74 Saturday at Alumni Arena. The Rockets have now lost five of their last six outings. However, they are still tied for fourth place (with Kent State) in the MAC standings.
Although UT connected on 51.9 percent from the field, Buffalo hit 35 if 56 shots (62.5%) overall and 13 of 23 (56.5%) from beyond the arc.
Tyson Dunn topped all scorers with 26 points. He made 10 of 14 from the field and 6 f 9 treys. Bryson Wilson tallied 20 points without missing a shot. He hit all eight shots from the field (including 3 threes) and one free throw. Ben Michaels similiarly hit all eight shots from the field (including two triples). Buffalo's bench knocked down 15 of 16 shots on the day.
Javan Simmons led Toledo, sinking 7 of 8 from the field and all seven free throws on the way to 21 points. Sonny Wilson (16) and Sam Lewis (15) were also in double figures.
The teams were tied at 38-all early in the second half. Buffalo then pulled out to a 15-point lead with 9:06 remaining. The Bulls maintained a double-digit lead most of the way to the finish.
ATHENS, OH -- AJ Clayton missed his team's loss to Miami in Oxford. He was back in the lineup Saturday, and his efforts helped put Ohio (16-13, (10-6 MAC) back in the win column. Clayton hit 8 of 12 shots while scoring 20 points as the Bobcats beat Miami 75-66 at the Convocation Center.
The RedHawks (21-6, 12-4 MAC) haven't won at the Convo since 2011. After leading 23-22 with 9:09 left in the first period, they spent the rest of the day playing catch-up.
The hosts led 40-33 at intermission. Their biggest lead was 12 points (52-40) at 16:36 of the second stanza.
