Zips overcome Buffalo upset bid
CLEVELAND, OH -- Up by 13 with 4:14 to play, the Akron Zips (27-5, 17-1 MAC) held off a late Buffalo (17-15, 7-11 MAC) rally to claim a 73-70 win Thursday in first round action of the Mid-American Conference Men's Basketball Tournament at Rocket Arena. With the victory, second-seeded UA advances to meet the Ohio-Kent State winner Friday.

. . . one (71-70) following a dunk by Tim Oboh with 1:19 to play. However, UA's Tavari Johnson hit a pair of free throws with 30 seconds left. Bowling Green put up three treys in its next two possessions but could not get a shot to fall.
Johnson led all scorers with 25 points. Amani Lyles and Shammah Scott contributed 12 apiece for UA, while Evan Maffey chipped in 12 points. Lyles also recorded a game-high 16 rebounds.
Ryan Sabol led the Bulls with 24 points. Angelo Brizzi added 17, while Oboh recorded a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Akron led 42-29 at intermission.
