ATHENS, OH -- MAC-leading Akron (21-6, 13-1 MAC) absorbed its first conference loss of the season Saturday as Ohio (15-12, 9-5 MAC) dominated for much of an 84-67 victory at the Convocation Center.
The verdict broke a 14-game winning streak by Akron. Ohio won for the third time in its last four decisions.
The Bobcats took an early lead and owned a 43-29 advantage at intermission. Ohio expanded that to 26 points with 6:41 to play and finished with a 17-point advantage.
Junior guard Jackson Paveletzke scored 21 points to lead Ohio. AJ Clayton (18) and AJ Brown (16) also reached double figures.
Amani Lyles topped UA with 17 points. The 6-7 junior forward connected on 7 of 8 from the field. Tabari Johnson and Seth Wilson contributed 12 apiece, while Sharron Young added 10 points.
Neither team shot particularly well from outside the arc, with Ohio making 7 of 26 and Akron connected on 4 of 18. The Bobcats registered three more field goals overall and knocked down eight more field goals.
DeKALB, IL -- Eastern Michigan (14-13, 7-7 MAC) overcame a 10-point halftime deficit to defeat Northern Illinois (5-22, 1-13 MAC) 79-76 Saturday at the NIU Convention Center.
It was the third straight win for EMU, which has won four of its last five. Northern Illinois extended its losing streak to eight games.
The Huskes led 76-69 following Quentin Jones' layup with 1:21 remaining. Eastern Michigan, however, stormed back. It started with Jalen Terry's triple at 1:14. Da'Sean Nelson's layup with 18 secons left pulled the Eagles within two. Christian Henry's steal set up a Terry layup two seconds later, tying the contest at 76-all.
Another Huskies turnover gave Eastern Michigan possession, and Terry launched his game-winning three just before the final horn.
Terry tallied 28 points to lead all scorers. Nelson had 19 points and Henry added 10.
Jones topped NIU with 20 points, followed by James Dent Jr. (19) and Tsvet Sotirov (17).
MUNCIE, IN -- Payton Sparks scored 18 points to lead Ball State (14-13, 7-7 MAC) past Buffalo (8-19, 3-11 MAC) 80-66 Saturday at Worthen Arena.
Joining Sparks in double figures were Mickey Pearson Jr. (14), Ben Hendriks (14) and Jermahri Hill (10).
Kavon Bradford scored 18 points in 22 minutes off the bench for Buffalo. Ryan Sabol added 14, while Tyson Dunn chipped in 10 points and seven assists.
The Cardinals led by 14 with just under nine minutes to play in the first half. UB pulled within three early in the second stanza. However, BSU remained in front on the way to a 14-point victory.
It was Ball State's fourth win in its last five games, The only loss in that span was by one point to Toledo Tuesday. Buffalo, meanwhile, has lost three straight and six of its last seven.
KALAMAZOO, MI -- Central Michigan (12-15, 5-9 MAC) shot 52.6 percent from the field and out-rebounded the Broncos by 13 to defeat Western Michigan (9-18, 6-8 MAC) 86-57 Saturday at University Arena.
Leading by just two (21-19) with 9:18 left in the first period, the Chippewas pulled out to a 46-27 halftime advantage. CMU then out-scored the hosts by 10 in the second period for a 29-point victory.
The win broke CMU's three-game losing streak and prevented Western Michigan from posting a third-straight win.
Ugnius Jarusevicius topped all scorers with 21 points. Anthony Prichard recorded a triple-double (10 points, 10 rebounds, 12 assists). Bryan Ndjonga and Kyler Vanderjagt contributed 15 points apiece. Jakobi Heady added 11.
JaVaughn Hannah led Western Michigan with 19 points. Chansey Willis Jr. contributed 10.
