MOUNT PLEASANT, MI -- Central Michigan (8-4, 6-2 MAC) continued its late season surge Friday with a decisive 31-10 victory over Eastern Michigan (7-5, 4-4 MAC) at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.
It was the fourth straight victory for CMU and allowed the Chippewas to secure the Michigan MAC trophy. Central Michigan had previously defeated Western Michigan, and its only loss over the final seven weeks was a 39-38 setback to Northern Illinois.
The Chippewas totaled 236 on the ground and 130 through the air. Freshman standout Lew Nichols III spearheaded the ground part as he continued his stellar season with 44 carries for 194 yards and a TD. Quarterback Daniel Richardson, meanwhile, completed 12 of 24 pass attempts for 130 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Senior JaCorey Sullivan caught both touchdowns among four balls for 46 yards.
Ben Bryant led Eastern Michigan, completing 24 of 35 passes for 221 yards. However, he was under pressure all day as CMU registered seven sacks and 11 TFL. With Bryant's 45 yards in losses, the Eagles netted just five total yards rushing.
"What a gutsy, great effort by our defense," CMU coach Jim McElwain said. "To hold any team, I don't care who they are, to five yards rushing. The way (our defense) affected the quarterback and the way we didn't let their playmakers get out on us like they have all year. Credit the secondary. I think it was an unbelievable defensive effort."
Sullivan's 9-yard TD reception late in the first period put the hosts in front and they never trailed. The teams traded second quarter field goals and third quarter touchdowns, with Marion Luke's 100-yard kick return accounting for CMU's points. Samson Evans had a 2-yard run for Eastern Michigan's only touchdown, and the Chippewas led 17-10 after three periods.
Central Michigan pulled away in the fourth quarter, scoring with a 26-yard Sullivan pass reception and 33-yard Nichols run.
