MIAMI REDHAWKS (0-1)
The good news is that Miami is playing at home. The bad news is that the RedHawks will be missing quarterback Brett Gabbert … and at least a couple other offensive cogs -- when they face Robert Morris Saturday night.
>> With the junior QB out indefinitely, Cincinnati and Northwestern await in the wings. All-important MAC conference play begins after that, MU can use a week against somebody who … let’s just say …WASN’T in a bowl game last year! The Colonials are an FCS team currently playing football as an associate member of the Big South Conference.
>> Freshman Aveon Smith will be at the helm for Miami. Through spring and fall work, he has shown himself to be a skilled runner, and head coach Chuck Martin said Smith has made progress in passing and other facets of the game.He cannot, however, match Gabbert’s skill/knowledge/experience set at this time.
>> It is what it is with the RedHawks offense, which last Saturday also lost TE Jack Coldiron for at least a couple weeks and offensive tackles Sam Vaughn -- possibly for the season.
>> For what it’s worth, Miami was able to move the ball early against Kentucky and scored its only touchdown of the evening off the first drive. Tyre Shelton finished that trip with a 22-yard run. Overall, the RedHawks totaled 111 yards running and 179 through the air. Gabbert, who left midway though the final period, completed 20-of-28 passes on the evening. Smith went 2-for-4 with a couple of short tosses.
>> Mac Hippenhammer led Miami with seven catches for 85 yards, and Martin said Kentucky made some defensive adjustments after the 5-11 senior’s early success.
Despite some key graduation and transfer losses, Miami played pretty well on defense through much of the game while facing a well-respected SEC quarterback. The RedHawks registered four sacks and got a goal line interception from freshman Eli Blakely. They also limited UK to 50 yards on 26 rushing attempts.
