MUNCIE, IN -- Kiael Kelly's 29-yard TD pass to Kameron Anthony with 1:53 remaining gave hosting Ball State (4-5, 3-2 MAC) a 17-13 win over Kent State (3-6, 2-3 MAC) Wednesday at Scheumann Stadium.
The Cardinals have won all four home games this year and lost all six road matchups. They still need two wins over the last three games to reach bowl eligibility, but next week's tilt against Eastern Michigan is BSU's last home game. The Cardinals finish with road games at Toledo and Miami.
Kent State, meanwhile, now needs to win its final three contests (at Akron, Central Michigan and at Northern Illinois) to reach the minimum bowl requirement of six victories.
The Flashes outgained Ball State 301-238 overall but committed the game's only turnover and were penalized 10 times for 78 yards.
Kelly completed 17 of 29, good for 173 yards and two Cardinal TDs. He also led BSU on the ground with 21 carries for 53 of Ball State's 65 yards rushing.
Kent State QB Dru DeShields connected on 15 of 27 throws totaling 212 yards.
Wayne Harris topped KSU receivers with 87 yards on five catches.
Gavin Garcia contributed 59 yards on 12 carries.
DC Pippin 25-yard field goal gave Ball State a first quarter lead and Kelly hit TJ Horton for a 1-yard TD pass to put the Cardinals up 10-0 early in the second period.
Will Hryszko's 39-yard field goal finished a 13-play Kent State drive to make it a 10-3 game with 6:18 left before intermission.
A short Cardinals punt and 24-yard runback set up another Kent State score late in the third period. Donovan Delaey took it in from four yards out as KSU pulled even (10-10).
Hryszko gave the Flashes their first and only lead with a 28-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter, but Ball State struck for one more TD to pull out the win.
TOLEDO, OH -- Trayvon Rudolph returned the opening kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown and Toledo (5-4, 3-3 MAC) scored 21 second quarter points on the way to a dominating 42-3 win over Northern Illinois Wednesday at the Glass Bowl.
The Huskies broke a six-game losing streak 10 days earlier, but UT took quick control and rode its defense in the second half.
The Rockets are a game behind four other MAC teams who have just one loss. They meet one of those teams -- Miami -- next week in Oxford before finishing against Ball State (home) and Central Michigan (away).
Toledo outgained NIU 443-203 overall. UT quarterback Tucker Gleason provided 309 yards (and 2 TDs) while completing 25 of 31 passes (80.6%),
Chip Trayanum, Kenji Christian and Gleason all scored rushing TDs. The latter two combined for 16 carries and 69 of the team's 134 yards rushing.
Junior Vandeross III led Toledo receivers with six catches totaling 97 yards with one touchdown.
Northern Illinois was held to 62 yards rushing, averaging 1.7 ypc.
