BUFFALO, NY -- Ohio (8-4, 6-2 MAC) quarterbak Parker Navarro threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as the Bobcats edged Buffalo (5-7, 4-4 MAC) 31-26 Friday at UB Stadium.
The visitors out-gained UB 506-370 overall and had a 3-1 edge in turnovers. However, after building a 21-7 halftime lead, Ohio was out-scored 19-10 after intermission.
The 'Cats went up by 15 points (28-13) on a 6-yard Navarro run midway through the third quarter. However, they would score just three more points after that. Buffalo tallied two touchdowns -- one on a Ta'Quan Roberson run and another on a 29-yard Roberson pass to Jasaiah Gaithings.
The latter came with 3:47 remaining and pulled UB within five points. However, Ohio final possession left just 20 seconds on the clock after a punt pinned Buffalo on its own seven-yard line. The Bulls were unable to cross mid-field before time expired.
NOTES:
• Navarro connected on 10 of 23 pass attempts, good for 147 yards with two TDs and an interception.
• Chase Hendricks led Bobcat receivers with five catches totaling 92 yards with a touchdown.
• Ohio's ground game produced 359 yards (2 TDs) on 54 rushes. Navarro logged 18 carries for 134 yards and a score, while Sieh Bangura ran 22 times for 120 yards and a TD.
• UB's Roberson completed 16 of 27 attempts for 270 yards with two TDs and a pick.
• Nike mcMillan (5 catches, 122 yards) and Victor Snow (4 catches, 82 yards) led Buffalo receiving.
• Terance Shelton Jr. led UB rushing with 15 carries for 57 yards.
DE KALB, IL -- Down by 11 points in the fourth quarter, Kent State rallied with two touchdowns to defeat Northern Illinois 35-31 Friday at Huskie Stadium.
Gavin Garcia led the Flashes ground game with 24 carries for a career-high total of 151 yards and a game-deciding touchdown.. Cade Wolford also scored a TD among two rushes for 52 yards. As a team, KSU logged 36 carries for 231 yards (6.41 ypc).
Kent State quarterback Dru DeShields, meanwhile, connected on 11 of 22 passes, good for 207 yards (2 TDs, 1 INT). Dashawn Martin and Wayne Harris combined for six catches, 137 yards and a TD.
Northern Illinois junior QB Jalen Macon threw just 10 passes, completing five for 27 yards. However, the Huskies recorded 307 yards on 58 rushes (5.2 ypc). Senior Chavon Wright led the NIU ground attack, carrying 30 times for 185 yards with 2 TDs. Macon added 65 yards (2 TDs) on 17 carries.
The teams traded scores -- and the lead -- through the first half. A 9-yard run by Macron with 47 seconds left gave NIU a 21-17 edge at intermission.
Will Hryszko's 28-yard field goal was the third period's only points, pulling KSU with one at 21-20. However,Northern Illinois ran off 10 straight points. The last seven were set up by T Powell's fumble recovery and 49-yard return to the Flashes 1-yard line. Chavon Wright ran it in on the next play, and NIU led 31-20.
Kent State responded with touchdowns on its next two drives. The first covered 67 yards in seven plays. The second was a six-play, 80-yard that culminated with Garcia's 26-yard scamper.
Down 35-31 with just over four minutes left, Northern Illinois embarked on a final drive. Kent State, however, made the going tough. Twelve plays and 48 yards later, NIU surrendered the ball on downs.
