AMHERST, MA -- Hunter Najm tossed three touchdowns among nine passing attempts, and Austyn Dendy ran for 115 yards with two TDs to lead Bowling Green (4-8, 2-6 MAC) over Massachusetts 45-14 Tuesday at Warren McGuirk Alumni Stadium.
For UMass, it marked the end of a winless first season back in the Mid-American Conference. The Falcons, meanwhile, fell three short of last year's seven-win season and came up short on bowl eligibility.
Bowling Green rolled up a 28-0 lead with 9:47 left in the second quarter. However, UMass scored two quick touchdowns in the final 3:30 before intermission.
The Falcon defense stepped up in the second half, shutting out UMass for the final two quarters. Offensively, BGSU added 17 more points to seal its win.
NOTES
• Bowling Green threw nine passes and ran the ball 48 times.
• Dendy logged 22 carries for 115 yards and two scores. As a team, the Falcons totaled 278 yards and three rushing TDs.
• Najm completed 7 of 9 passes for 128 yards and three scores.
• No Falcon receiver had more than two receptions. Brennan Ridley's only catch went for 87 yards and a TD. Dendy's one catch was an 11-yard touchdown.
• UMass was held to 69 yards rushing on 29 plays. Elijah Faulkner led with eight carries totaling 36 yards.
• UMass QB Grant Jordan completed 22 of 35 attempts, good for 223 yards and two TDs.
• JacQuon Gibson registered 10 receptios totaling 138 yards. Reece Adkins and Max Dowling caught 1 TD pass apiece.
• UMass defenders Zeraun Daniel and Tyler Martin combined for 24 tackles. Gideon Lampron led BGSU with 10 tackles.
YPSILANTI, MI -- Western Michigan (8-4, 7-1 MAC) scored 31 straight points through the second and third quarters as the Broncos defeated rival Eastern Michigan (4-8, 3-5 MAC) 31-21 Tuesday at Rynearson Stadium.
Five EMU turnovers aided the Broncos, who sealed a place in next week's MAC championship game.
The Eagles scored first, driving 98 yards in nine plays for a first quarter touchdown.
Western Michigan pulled even midway through the second period on a 36-yard Talique Williams run and added 10 more points before intermission.
Two more Bronco TDs in the third quarter gave the visitors a 31-7 lead. Eastern Michigan scored all 14 fourth quarter points, but the late run was not enough to catch WMU.
NOTES:
• EMU outgained the winning Broncos 461-378 and had three more first downs (21-18) despite going 3 for 12 on third down chances. WMU converted 6 of 12.
• Lowry passed for 100 yards, completing 7 of 13 pass attempts. He also led WMU rushers with two touchdowns among 18 carries covering 92 yards
• Jalen Buckley and Williams combined for 21 carries, 137 yards and two scores.
• EMU quarterback Noah Kim connected on 24 of 41 passes, good for 327 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions.
• Seven Eagles caught multiple passes. Dontae McMillan led the way with four receptions for 126 yards and a TD. Jamarian Wheeler and Harold Mack combined for 11 catches and 136 yards.
• Marcel Tyler and John Peters recovered EMU fumbles. Sefa Saipaia Jr, Aaron Wofford and Joey Pope recorded interceptions for WMU.
