PRESEASON COACHES/MEDIA POLL: Third, MAC West
PRESEASON ALL-MAC TEAM: Jaelan Sanford
► The Rockets have been somewhat streaky in non-conference play – winning three straight to open the stretch and winning three to close it. In between, they lost three, won two and lost two.
► UT lost three starters from last year’s squad, which finished 17-17 (9-9 MAC). Gone are starters Jonathan Williams (G), Steve Taylor Jr. (F) and Jordan Lauf (G). Center Zach Garber has also departed.
► Kowalczyk noted that with the departure of Taylor, a key player in the halfcourt, this year’s UT squad may try to “get up and down the floor more and shoot more threes.”
► Kowalczuk called senior guard Tre’Shaun Fletcher his best player in practice last year. The senior transfer from Colorado has turned that success into game success this season. His averages of 17.4 points 8.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists per outing are also team highs.
► Joining Fletcher in double figures are junior guard Jaelan Sanford (15.9 ppg), junior forward Nate Navigato 14.4 ppg, and sophomore forward Luke Knapke (11.6 ppg).
► Navigato led the MAC in conference play 3-point field goal percentage last year (49.5%). He finished recent non-conference play atop the MAC with a 44.1 percent average (41 of 93). He is tird for third in 3-pointers per game (3.2).
► Freshman Marreon Jackson ranks second (MAC) in assist/turnover ratio (2.4). He “is a point guard with a really good feel,” Kowalcyzk said. “He plays with a great deal of energy … and a chip on his shoulder.
► Toledo is ninth among MAC teams in scoring margin (+2.3), producing 78.2 ppg and allowing 75.9 ppg.
► The Rockets have hit 74.6 percent of their charity tosses (3rd, MAC).
