The Akron Zips are still chasing a MAC East title, while Miami’s RedHawks have run out of wiggle room if they hope to play in a second consecutive bowl game.
The two teams will meet Tuesday at Yager Stadium in Oxford. It’s a 7:30 kickoff time and will air on ESPN2.
Akron posted a . . .
UA also benefitted from three Miami turnovers. Two were Zip interceptions of Noah Wezensky, who made his first and only start while in the program.
Gus Ragland came back from a spring ACL injury the following week and led Miami to six straight wins, a MAC East co-championship and bowl game appearance.
MU figured to content for the top spot again this year, but a series of narrow losses eventually knocked the RedHawks out of contention. Rival Ohio delivered the final blow last Tuesday, as quarterback Nathan Rourke led OU to a 45-28 victory in Athens. Rourke threw for three TDs and run for three more as the bobcats pulled away down the stretch.
Junior Billy Bahl, who took over for injured QB Gus Ragland, made his second 2017 start against Ohio, completing 28 of 51 attempts for 350 yards with three TDs and two interceptions.
James Gardner caught all three touchdown passes while posting a career best 10 receptions for 166 yards and the three scores. Alonzo Smith led the running game with 10 rushes for 81 of Miami’s 98 rushing yards.
Tony Reid and Kobe Burse led MU with 11 tackles each. The latter had previously totaled four stops in limited action.
Akron enters Tuesday having won four of its last five. The lone loss was by a 48-21 count at MAC West leader Toledo.
The Zips bounced back last week, albeit the win was a squeaker. Buffalo put up a fight before Akron scored the winning touchdown and PAT with 4:46 remaining in the game as the hosts posted a 21-20 victory.
Senior quarterback Thomas Woodson was the key for UA, passing for all three Zip touchdowns. He completed 21 of 29 passes, good for 286 yards and the three scores with one interception.
Seniors A.J. Coney and Tra’Von Chapman combined for 12 catches and 157 yards but did not sure. Austin Wolf, Fransohn Bickley and Kevin Gladney – all seniors – caught TD passes.
Junior DB Jordan George led the defense with 11 hits (8 solo).
With a win over Miami, Akron would:
1. Become bowl eligible with its sixth win.
2. Keep pace with the East’s other one loss team – Ohio. UA and the ‘Cats will meet Tuesday, Nov. 14.
With a win over Akron, Miami would keep alive its quest for another bowl appearance. The RedHawks must win all three remaining games – Akron and Eastern Michigan are at home, while MU travels to Ball State for its season finale.
