The Akron Zips open their 2017 home schedule and ninth season inside InfoCision Stadium, Saturday evening when they face Arkansas - Pine Bluff.
Akron hopes to even its record at 1-1 with a win over the Golden Lions, who play in the Southwestern Athletic Conference and belong to the NCAA Football Bowl Championship Division . It is the first meeting ever between the two schools.

● UAPB opened its season last Saturday night at home, defeating Division II Morehouse College 23-10. The Golden Lions came back from a 10-0 deficit in the third quarter, scoring the last 23-points of the contest
● Junior RB KeShawn Williams had 16 carries for 128 yards, which included a 37-yard touchdown that put the home team in front to stay.
● Fifth year senior quarterback Brandon Duncan completed 14-of-25 passes for 159 yards and a score. The receivers were led by redshirt freshman Tyrin Ralph, who had five catches for 26 yards
● The defensive unit was led by junior FS Rico Merriweather who had nine total tackles (five solo) and an interception
● UAPB was 4-7 a season ago and will be playing its first game against Mid-American Conference opposition.
● Head coach is Monte Coleman is in his tenth season at UAPB. The former Central Arkansas linebacker played 16 seasons in the NFL with the Washington Redskins and was a part of three Super Bowl titles with the Burgandy and Gold. He was named one of the 70 greatest players in Redskins history. In addition he was named to the All-Madden team in 1993.
● The Zips opened their 2017 campaign last Saturday at nationally ranked Penn State and were shutout, 52-0.
● UA managed just 159 yards of total offense and only moved the ball twice across midfield the entire game.
● Senior QB Thomas Woodson completed 12-of-23 passes for 71 yards. Graduate player RB Warren Ball had 13 carries for 27 yards, while senior WR Tra’Von Chapman led the receivers with three catches for 10 yards.
● Defensively, the Zips were led by senior DB Zach Guiser who had 10 total tackles (eight solo) and a first quarter interception in the end zone.
● This is the first ever meeting between the two schools and the first SWAC school UA will face in its history
● The game is the ninth home opener at InfoCision Stadium-Summa Field, where the Zips are 4-4 in openers coming into this Saturday
