Howard (1-0) under new head coach Mike London came up with one of the biggest upsets Week One as the Bisons came back to defeat Nevada-Las Vegas, 43-40, Saturday.

● The Bison opened theIir 2017 season with one of the biggest upsets in week one of this season as Howard (45 ½ point underdogs) defeated the Rebels of Nevada-Las Vegas, 43-40, at Sam Boyd Stadium. It was Howard’s first win over an FBS program.
● It was a game that featured 1,013 yards of total offense (449 registered by Howard)
● Freshman QB Caylin Newton had 21 carries for 190 yards and two touchdowns. His four-yard run midway through the fourth quarter put the Bison in front to stay. In addition, he completed 15-of-26 passes for an additional 140 yards and a score, as well as running in a two-point conversion
● Newton, the younger brother of Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton was named MEAC Offensive Player of the Week.
● Junior WR Jason Collins had five receptions for 39 yards
● The defensive unit was led by fifth year senior SS Leland Lassiter who had 11 total tackles (three solo).
● The game is the first ever meeting between the two schools. The last time Howard met a MAC opponent was the opening of the 2014 season, losing 41-0 at Akron
● HU is led by head coach Mike London, who is in his first year in with the Bison after spending last season as the associate head coach and defensive coordinator at Maryland. Prior to that he was the head coach at the University of Virginia and at Richmond, going 51-51 with the Cavaliers and Spiders. He led UR to the FCS Championship in 2008.
● The game is the middle of a three-game road stretch for the Bison, who will comclude this road sojourn next Saturday at Richmond against the Spiders.
● The Flashes play the first of only five home games at Dix Stadium this season Saturday against the Bison
● KSU opened the 2017 campaign last Saturday at defending national champion Clemson, losing to the Tigers in “Death Valley,” 58-3.
● The only points for the Blue and Gold came from the foot of junior PK Shayne Hynes on a 37-yard field goal early in the second quarter.
● The Flashes offense managed just 120 yards on total offense. Senior QB Nick Holley led ther offense with 10 carries for 59 yards. KSU attempted just four passes over the game, completing one for one yard.
● The defense was led by LB Matt Bahr, who had nine total tackles (six solo) -- all of them coming in the first half. It was the former safety’s first start at linebacker.
● P Derek Adams was named MAC East Special Teams Player of the Week. He had four punts for an average over 50 yards against the Tigers. One boot was a career-high 66 yards.
