Kent State is trying to break a three-game slide, while Northern Illinois hopes to shake off a failed upset bid last week with a win to open Mid-American Conference play Saturday in DeKalb.

Kent State, meanwhile, found out the hard way that football is a game of inches. On the first drive of the second half against Buffalo Saturday, KSU faced a fourth down at the UB one. The Bulls defense then rose to the challenge, stopping KSU and turning the ball over to the offense. That unit then marched 99- ards for a decisive touchdown in a 27-13 Buffalo victory.

NORTHERN ILLINOIS HUSKIES (2-2)
● UB enters MAC play with a 2-2 non-conference mark. After losing their opener at home to Boston College, the Huskies then defeated FCS member Eastern Illinois.
NIU stayed in the win column with a big win at Nebraska, 21-17, before falling the the undefeated Aztecs of San Diego State in the final non-conference game.
● NIU in its first four games is averaging 26.8 points and 374 yards offensively. The Huskies are led by sophomore QB Daniel Santacaterina, who is completing 65.5 percent of this passes (61-of-923) for 642 yards with six touchdowns and four interceptions.
● The running game is led by senior Jordan Huff, who has rushed for 350 yards and a touchdown. The receivers are paced by senior Christian Blake’s 20 receptions for 254 yards and three scores. NIU’s offensive line has allowed seven sacks
● The Huskies defense has yielded an average of 21 points and 293.2 yards in its four games with nine sacks and six interceptions.
● Senior LB Bobby Jones IV leads the defense with 40 total tackles (20 solo). Sophomore DE Sutton Smith has 10.5 tackles for loss, including four sacks. Six Huskies have intercepted a pass each, including Shaun Lurry’s 87-yarder in the first quarter against Nebraska
● Blake (13 catches for 160 yards and freshman P Matt Ference (eight for 36.4 average) were named MAC West Offensive and Special Teams Players of the Week.
KENT STATE GOLDEN FLASHES (1-4, 0-1 MAC)
● The Flashes dropped their third consecutive game last Saturday, losing to Buffalo 27-13 in the MAC opener at Dix Stadium.
● QB George Bollas completed 17-of-26 passes for 242 yards. WR Trey Harrell had six receptions for 122 yards
● Safety Lawrence-Burke led the defense with nine total tackles (seven solo) as well an interception in the first quarter.
● KSU’s offense had 444 total yards (320 passing and 124 rushing), their most in a game since 2015 at home against Delaware State.
