MRO PREVIEW: Ohio at Akron

For a second consecutive season, the Ohio Bobcats and Akron Zips will meet with the Mid-American Conference Eastern Division title in the balance.
 
The Bobcats come into Tuesday’s matchup at InfoCision Stadium riding a five-game winning streak. Most recently, they delivered a stunning 38-10 home win last week over Western Division leader Toledo.  It was the Rockets first loss in MAC play this season.
 
Akron, meanwhile, surprised .  .  . 

. . . many with a 3-0 start in conference play. That was UA’s best conference start since joining the MAC. However, Akron dropped two of its last three games, including last week at Miami, 24-14.
 
THE SERIES
Tuesday evening’s UA v OU game is the 34th lifetime meeting between the two schools, with the Bobcats having a 19-13-1 advantage. Ohio has won the last nine games in the series, including last season’s finale in Athens, 9-3. Ohio is 4-0 lifetime at InfoCision Stadium. UA’s last win in the series came in 2007 at the Rubber Bowl 48-37.

Here’s more on the two schools:
 
OHIO UNIVERSITY BOBCATS (8-2, 5-1 MAC)
● Last week, Ohio moved into first place in the Eastern Division by defeating Toledo at Peden Stadium, 38-10, in a battle of the top two teams in the MAC
 
● In their ten games of this 2017 season, the Bobcats are averaging 40.9 points and 435.2 yards of offense.
 
● They are led by QB Nathan Rourke, who has used his feet as well as his arm whild guiding the offense. The sophomore has completed 56.3 percent of his passes (125-of-222) for 1,643 yards with 14 touchdowns and four interceptions.
 
● In addition, Rourke has rushed for 688 yards and leads the MAC with 17 touchdowns. Last week against the Rockets, Rourke rushed for 115 yards and a score.
 
● Senior running back A. J. Ouellette leads the ground game with 897 yards and seven touchdowns. He had three straight 100-yard games earlier in the season.
 
● Senior WR Brendan Cope leads the receiving corps with 34 receptions for 471 yards and four touchdowns
 
● The offensive line has allowed 14 sacks.
 
● The Cats defense has allowed 24.1 points and 368.2 yards per game while registering 26 sacks and nine interceptions.
 
● Senior LB Quentin Poling is tops in tackles with 92 total stops (35 solo). He also leads with 11.5 tackles for losses, as well as 4.5 sacks. Fellow senior LB Chad Moore leads with three interceptions.
 
● In the win over UT, the Cats offense gained a season high 532 yards and scored 38 points, while allowing just 316 yards to the high-powered Rockets, who scored a season low 10 points.
 
● Head coach Frank Solich is 5-0 against current Zips head man Terry Bowden
 

AKRON ZIPS (5-5, 4-2 MAC)
● Last week, the Zips lost their final road game of the 2017 season, falling at Miami 24-14. That setback dropped UA one game behind Ohio in the Eastern Division race.
 
● Redshirt freshman Cato Nelson got the start at quarterback against Miami.  He filled in for senior Thomas Woodson, who was suspended for the game after violating team rules. In his first collegiate start, Nelson went 19-of-38 for 218 yards and a touchdown. In addition, he ran for a score.
 
● Manny Morgan led the UA ground game with 41 yards on ten carries. Kwadarrius Smith had six catches for 69 yards.
 
● Defensively, Alvin Davis had nine total tackles (seven solo) while Shawn Featherstone and Jordan George each had an interception.
