
Playing its first game of the post-P.J. Fleck era, the Broncos were impressive last Saturday in a road test against No. 4 Southern California.
USC won the game, 49-31, but . . .
Coming off a win over MAC-member Bowling Green last week, Michigan State, who leads the series 13-2, should provide another challenge for the Broncos.

● The Spartans opened their 2017 slate with a 35-10 win over Bowling Green.
● After trailing 3-0 after one quarter, MSU scored five straight touchdowns over the second and third quarters. BGSU finished scoring with a touchdown early in the fourth period.

Michigan State out-gained the Falcons 465-212 and held BGSU to 57 yards rushing.
● Quarterback Brian Lewerke completed 22 of 33 passes for 250 yards and three touchdowns without a pick.
● Lewerke was also the Spartans top rusher, carrying eight times for 69 yards. Madre London had 10 rushes for 54 yards and scored the Spartans only rushing touchdown.
● Junior Felton Davis II (2) and junior TE Matt Sokol (1) provided MSU’s receiving scores.
● Nate Locke (15) and Cameron Jefferies combined for 25 tackles (10 solo) to lead the Spartan defense.
● Former Bronco standout quarterback Tim Lester is the new coach at WMU, taking over after the departure of highly successful P.J. Fleck, who now coaches the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
● Western Michigan’s defense registered two interceptions and two sacks against Southern Cal quarterback and Heisman Trophy hopeful Sam Darnold.
● Sophomore Justin Tranquill led Western with eight tackles (5 solo). Asantay Brown owned seven tackles (five solo) and a sack.
● The Broncos outgained USC on the ground, 263-232, ;with LeVante Bellamy eclipsing the century mark (102 yards). Jamauri Bogan carried 15 times for 78 yards, while Jarvion Franklin stepped off 41 yards on 12 trips.
● Redshirt sophomore QB Jon Wassink rushed for 35 yards with a score and completed 11 of 22 passes for 67 yards. He also scored from 27 yards out on a throw-back pass from wideout Keishawn Watson.
● Darius Phillips returned four kickoffs, including one for 100 yards and a touchdown.
