PREVIEW: Howard at Kent State

The Kent State Golden Flashes open their 2018 home schedule Saturday afternoon when they face the Howard Bison at Dix Stadium. Both teams are seeking their first win of the season.
 
Howard (0-1) from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, will be playing its second straight MAC opponent. It opened the season last Saturday at Ohio and gave the Bobcats all sorts of problems before a kickoff return for a touchdown turned the game around. Ohio eventually posted a 38-32 victory..
 
Kent State (0-1) traveled to Illinois last week and had a 17-3 halftime lead. KSU was tied with the Fighting Illini late in the third quarter before the home team rallied for a 31-24 victory

THE ALL-TIME SERIES
This is the second lifetime meeting between the two schools with the Golden Flashes picking up a come-from-behind 38-31 win in their home opener last season.

HOWARD BISON (0-1)
►► The Bison and Ohio combined for 70 points and 1,068 total yards in last week’s opener.
 
►► HU had as much as a 16-3 lead in the second quarter and up 22-17 at halftime. However, the Bobcats took the second half kickoff 99-yards for a touchdown Ohio remained in front the rest of the way.The Bison closed the margin to five points late in the fourth quarter with a field goal but could not get any closer.
 
►► Sophomore QB Caylin Neton completed 26-of-52 passes for 439 yards and three touchdowns. In addition, he ran for 93 yards and a score.
 
►► WR Jeqez Ezzard had eight receptions for 223 yards and a touchdown.
 
►► The defense was led by Marcell Addison who made 12 total tackles (nine solo)
 
►► Howard is picked second to North Carolina A&T in the pre-season MEAC football poll.
 
►► Howard’s head coach is Mike London. He is in his second season and guided the Bison to a 7-4 mark in 2017.  London came from Maryland, where he was the assistant head coach and defensive line coach with the Terrapins under Randy Edsall.
Howard has an overall head coaching record of 58-56.  including  several seasons at Richmond and Virginia
 
►► Caylin Newton, younger brother of Cam (Auburn, Carolina Panthers) was the 2017 MEAC Rookie of the year as he passed for 2,432 yards and 13 touchdowns while rushing for 753 yards and 12 scores
 
►► HU is celebrating its 125th season of intercollegiate football in 2018
 
KENT STATE GOLDEN FLASHES (0-1)
►► KSU opened its season last Saturday at Illinois, falling 31-24. The Flashes held a surprising 17-3 lead at halftime before the Fighting Illini scored on four consecutive possession to take a 24-17 lead in the third quarter. Kent State tied the score late in the period before the home team tallied the winning touchdown midway through the fourth quarter.
 
►► QB Woody Barrett completed 28-of-41 passes for 270 yards and two touchdowns. In addition, he was KSU’s leading rusher with 117 yards on 18 carries and a score.
 
►► LB Jim Jones led the defense with 11 total tackles (five solo) and ws named MAC East Division Player of the Week
 
►► KSU is 42-29-1 in home openers
 
►► Saturday is Sean Lewis’ first home game as Golden Flashes head coach.
