Either the Kent State Golden Flashes or the Bowling Green Falcons will gain their first Mid-American Conference win Tuesday, ending a nasty losing streak in the process.
Tuesday’s matchup is the 86th lifetime meeting between the two schools, with the Falcons holding a decisive 60-19-6 edge. BGSU has won the last five games in the series, including last season at Dix Stadium 34-16 (which was the BGSU’s last MAC victory).
Kent State’s last win in the series was on November 17, 2012 at BG, 31-24, a victory that clinched the Flashes’ Eastern Division title.
►► The Falcons played their first game under interim head coach Carl Pelini last Saturday at Ohio. Bowling Green took an early 7-0 lead and the contest was tied 14-14 early in the second quarter before the Bobcats scored 25 unanswered points and en route to a 49-14 victory.
The loss was Falcons fifth straight overall and seventh in MAC play dating back to last season
►► Pelini was named interim head coach on October 21st after Mike Jinks was relieved of his duties. Pelini is in his first season at BGSU, coming from Youngstown State where he was the defensive coordinator
►► Over their eight games of 2018, the Falcons offensively are averaging 25.6 points and 377.8 yards per game
►► Sophomore QB Jarret Doege is completing 63.9 percent of his passes (182-of-285) for 2,078 yards with 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
Doege leads the MAC in completion percentage, yardage, and is tied with Buffalo’s Tyree Jackson in touchdown passes.
►► Fellow sophomore RB Andrew Clair leads the ground game with 495 yards and four touchdowns. In the Ohio game, Clair had only one carry, which went for six yards.
►► Senior WR Scott Miller is one of the top receivers in the MAC with 48 receptions for 785 yards and seven touchdowns
Miller leads the conference in yards and is tied for third in touchdowns. His 75-yard touchdown against the Bobcats came on the game’s fourth play, giving BGSU an early lead.
►► The offensive line has allowed 20 sacks.
►► The Falcons defense ranks at the bottom of the conference, averaging 47.8 points and 515.5 yards per game. Bowling Green has six sacks, four interceptions, 24 pass breakups, four forced fumbles and six fumble recoveries.
►► Senior LB Brandon Harris leads the tacklers with 85 total stops (49 solo) with a forced fumble and a pass breakup.
►► Fifth year senior DB Marcus Milton has two interceptions and six pass breakups while DB Jerry McBride has two sacks
►► BGSU plays two of its final three games on the road (at Central Michigan and Akron) before finishing the season at home against Buffalo
KENT STATE GOLDEN FLASHES (1-7, 0-4 MAC)
►► The Golden Flashes dropped an absolute heartbreaker last Saturday, falling to arch rival Akron 24-23 in overtime. It was KSU’s fourth consecutive loss in the Battle for the Wagon Wheel Trophy.
►► KSU had a 17-10 lead in the third quarter before the Zips tied things late in the third period to force overtime. Kent State then matched UA’s touchdown in overtime with one of its own. However, the extra point attempt that would have sent the game into a second overtime failed after a low snap.
►► The loss was the Flashes sixth straight overall and ninth straight against MAC competition dating back to last season
►► The Flashes offense is averaging 23.0 points and 394.1 yards offensively so far in 2018
►► QB Woody Barrett is completing 60.5 percent of his passes (173-of-286) for 1,748 yards with eight touchdowns and eight interceptions.
►► Barrett also has rushed for 378 yards and five scores. His 22-yard touchdown run at the end of the first half tied the score 10-10.
►► RB Justin Rankin leads the rushers with 560 yards and four touchdowns -- fifth in the MAC. He has produced two 100-yard rushing games
►► Rankin’s 29-yard touchdown reception in overtime pulled the Flashes to within 24-23.
►► WR Isiah McKoy leads the receivers with 36 catches for 368 yards, two touchdowns, and a pair of 100-yard games.
►► The offensive line has allowed 30 sacks (the most in the MAC)
►► The Flashes defense has allowed 35 points and 489 yards so far in 2018. The defense has 18 sacks, seven interceptions, 24 pass breakups, seven forced fumbles and eight fumble recoveries
►► LB Matt Bahr leads with 65 total tackles (38 solo) -- tenth best in the MAC
►► DE Theo Majette leads with three sacks, while DB Jamal Parker’s two interceptions is tied for fifth in the conference.
►► P Derek Adams was named MAC East Special Teams Player of the Week in his first game of the season back from an injury, averaging 46.4 yards per kick, including a career best 77 yards.
