OXFORD, Ohio -- Approaching the end of their non-conference slate, the Miami RedHawks cruised by NAIA foe Rio Grande 109-70 Sunday at Millett Hall.

Five RedHawks reached double figures, with freshman Nike Sibande pouring in 21 points to lead Miami (7-4) scorers.

Sophomore Bam Bowman, meanwhile, registered a double-double with career high’s in points (20) and rebounds (10).

“It feels great,” Bowman said of . . .

. . .  his first double-double at Miami, adding, “I’m trying to prepare myself for MAC play.”

The RedHawks, winners in four of their last five contests, have just two more non-conference tilts. Both will be challenging as MU goes on the road to face DePaul (Thursday) and Ohio State (Dec. 30). The inside game will be tested in both outings, but it was dominant against Rio Grande (5-9). Miami owned a 64-24 advantage on points in the paint and 22-9 edge in second chance points.

Bowman made 6 of 7 shots from the field, mostly from the inside but also hitting one 3-pointer. He was 7 of 10 at the charity stripe. Senior forward Logan McLane was 4 of 6.

“We just try to put those guys in positions to score the basketball,” MU head coach Jack Owns said, adding that Bowman is finally getting healthy. “He’s been banged up the last few weeks.”

As a team, the RedHawks knocked down 62.1 percent (41 of 66) from the field. After sinking just 2 of 10 treys before halftime, they went 6 of 11 in the second half for a game total of 8 for 21 (38.1%).

Joining Sibande and Bowman in double figures for MU were Darrian Ringo (12), Jalen Adaway (11) and Jake Wright (11). Ringo, came off the bench after an exam week illness, but hit all five of his shots from the field and dished out eight assists in 19 minutes of action.

Senior guard Will Hill, who came in averaging 21.9 ppg., led the Red Storm with 27 points. He made 8 of 21 from the field overall and 4 of 9 from beyond the arc. Hill was a perfect 7 of 7 on free throws.

“He’s a guy that can score in bunches,” Owens said.

Sophomore forward Stanley Christian and senior guard DeVon Price joined Hill in double figures with 11 apiece.

Collectively, the Red Storm connected on 36.4 percent (24 of 66) from the floor and 29.2 percent (7 of 24) on threes.  While they lost the rebounding battle 46-28, they helped themselves by sinking 15 of 17 free throw opportunities.

Miami never trailed and jumped out to a quick 8-2 advantage.

Ajdin Maksumic’s layup for Rio Grande made it a 12-8 game with 14:33 left to play, but Miami played add-on from that point. A steal by Ringo and subsequent Sibande layup gave the hosts a double-digit lead at 20-10 with 12:17 remaining in the half.

A 16-3 run put Miami in front by 23 (36-13) and the RedHawks went to intermission with a 29-point advantage at 54-25.

With the RedHawks improving their 3-point shooting in the second half, they increased their margin. Two Bowman free throws, followed by back-to-back triples by Wright and Isaiah Coleman-Lands put MU up by 37 and the visitors got no closer than 31 points the rest of the way.
