MONTEGO BAY, JAMAICA -- The Miami RedHawks withstood a late rally by Long Island University – Brooklyn to post a 78-74 victory Friday night at the Montego Bay Convention Center.
Miami, which ran its record under new head coach Jack Owens to 3-0, held a 15-point lead (67-52) with 5:26 remaining in the game. However, the . . .
“We have to do a better job … of taking care of the basketball,” Owens said.
After a Blackbirds time out, Miami managed to get the ball in to Ringo, who was quickly fouled. He canned both ends of a double bonus opportunity with three ticks left to make it a 78-74 score, which turned out to be the final.
At the moment, though, getting to four points was important. The Blackbirds are fond of the three and will keep shooting. After making just 4 of 14 (28.5%) 3-point tries in the first half, Long Island launched 19 more and made nine after intermission.
On the night, LIU hit 13 of 33 treys, with Coleman going 6 of 13 to lead the Blackbirds long distance efforts. He scored 20 points, while Joel Hernandez tallied a team-high 25 points. Raiquan Clark, who came in averaging 24 ppg, chipped in 15 points.
Miami, meanwhile, put four players in double figures, with Rod Mills coming off the bench to score a team-high 19 points. He was 3 of 5 from beyond the arc, 6 of 10 from the field and 4 of 4 from the line to spark several RedHawk rallies.
Logan McLane registered a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. “Logan set the tone,” Owens said. “He had that look.”
Jalen Adaway also had a double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing 10 caroms.
“He’s a big time player,” Owens said of Ringo.
Miami led through most of the firt half, pulling away with a 13-2 run down the stretch for a 34-21 halftime advantage. MU hit a respectable 44.8 percent overall, while LIU struggled with 22.9 percent. Both teams hit four threes.
The Blackbirds, however, seemed to have found their touch coming out of the locker room. A 10-2 LIU run closed the gap to 34-31.
Miami expanded its lead, reaching 15 points (67-52) before LIU made its final push, which came up just short.
Now 3-0 for the first time since the 1998-99 season, MU will go for No. 4 when it faces Hartford in another Jamaica Classic game Sunday (10 p.m. ET). That contest will air live on the CBS Sports Network.
