Down 7-3 in the second quarter, the Iowa Hawkeyes scored 35 of the game’s final 42 points to post a 38-14 win over Miami’s RedHawks at Kinnick Stadium Saturday.
Miami answered on the ensuing possession with a 10-play, 77-yard drive. Jack Sorenson’s 11-yard reception of Brett Gabbert’s fade pass put the RedHawks in front 7-3 after the PAT.
Gabbert, as a true freshman, got the starting nod from a group of three young quarterbacks - none of whom had thrown a pass in a collegiate game. He finished with 17 completions on 27 attempts, producing 186 yards and two touchdowns with one interception against the 20th-ranked Hawkeyes.
Sorenson, who caught the first MU touchdown, had a team-high five receptions. Luke Mayock caught three balls for 65 yards and tight end Andrew Homer scored a TD with one of his two receptions for 23 yards.
After Miami took its only lead of the evening, Iowa marched backdown the field, covering 79 yards with nine plays. Quarterback Brandon Smith found Nate Stanley for a 9-yard score with 8:20 remaining in the second period, and Iowa took a 10-7 lead into the locker room after a late Miami drive stalled following a penalty on fourth-and-one.
When play resumed after intermission, the Hawkeyes flexed their muscle and talent on both sides of the ball.
First, they held Miami to minus-one yard on its opening drive. The hosts then mixed run and pass, moving 82 yards for the first of four second half touchdowns. Iowa, in fact, scored a TD on four of six possessions after intermission. UI ran out the clock with two plays on its last possession. It also failed to score on a third-quarter drive when it lost a fumble.
Doug Costin picked up the loose ball and returned it. After a penalty on the return, MU began its drive on its own 40 and moved 60 yards in 10 plays. A Gabbert-to-Homer aerial covered the final 20 yards.
Most of Miami’s offensive success came via the pass. Fifty-nine rushing attempts yielded just 59 yards for a 2.4 ypc average. Iowa, once again owning a strong running game, ran 41 times for 213 yards.
