EMU (6-7) jumped ahead of KU (11-1) early, but after the Jayhawks took an 8-7 lead at the 16:57 mark, they never looked back.
Thompson registered his second consecutive double-double, going 5-of-8 from the floor and pulling down seven rebounds on both the offensive and defensive ends. Redshirt senior Paul Jackson added 15 points of his own, while fellow redshirt senior Elijah Minnie finished with 13.
Even with the strong game from Thompson, No. 5 Kansas asserted its will in the paint, outscoring Eastern, 46-20, down low. That difference could be seen in the shooting percentages, as KU shot 55.4 percent from the floor compared to EMU's 30 percent.
The Jayhawks also held the advantage over the Eagles from the three-point line, 33-percent to 19-percent. The two teams finished with the same total rebounds, 42-42, while the Green and White held a slight advantage in turnovers, forcing Kansas into 17 while committing 16.
Redshirt sophomore Ty Groce pulled down a career-high 10 boards in the effort while chipping in three points, while junior Damari Parris added nine points, two assists and two steals in just 11 minutes of play. Sophomore Malik Ellison led the Eagles with three assists.
With the non-conference portion of the schedule wrapped, Eastern Michigan welcomes the No. 21-ranked Buffalo Bulls to Ypsilanti for Friday night #MACtion, (Jan. 4). The game is the first of two nationally televised games in the MAC season for EMU, as the Eagles and Bulls tip off at 9 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.
