The scrimmage gave Candle and the coaching staff their final opportunity to evaluate their players in game-like conditions until practice resumes next August. Both veterans and newcomers alike had a chance to make their final impressions of the spring. Candle emphasized that his team is focused on the process of improvement.
"We aren't looking at it and saying so-and-so had x amount of rushing yards this spring so now he should expect to be all-conference. That's not where we're at," said Candle. "We're trying to get a little bit better each day on our fundamental principles. I thought we had a great January and February. We wanted to see if fighting over ropes and running through bags and jumping over cones would translate into practice. I think I saw that this spring. Now we need to take the next step this summer."
The Rockets open the 2019 season Aug. 31 vs. SEC opponent Kentucky. After a bye week, UT will host another Kentucky school, Murray State, at the Glass Bowl on Sept. 14.
