ESTERO, Fla. - The Central Michigan Chippewas went cold went they could least afford to Monday as the short-handed Chippewas suffered their first loss of the season, 63-60, to Weber State in their opener at the Gulf Coast Showcase at Germain Arena. KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Junior forward Kellen McCormick and sophomore point guard Thomas Wilder combined for 54 points leading the Western Michigan men’s basketball team to an 85-73 victory over visiting Rochester College Monday.
McCormick went off for a career-high 31 points including 19 in the second half. His previous career high for points was 14. The stretch four-man from West Bloomfield, Mich., was lights out from behind the arc, knocking down 9 of 11 three-point attempts while going 11-for-14 from the field for the game. EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Behind a red-hot three-point shooting performance, the No. 3/4 ranked Michigan State Spartans ran away from the Eastern Michigan Eagles basketball team, 89-65, Monday night, Nov. 23, in non-conference action at the Breslin Center.

BUFFALO, NY – Behind a season-high 20 points from sophomore Lamonte Bearden, the Buffalo Bulls overcame a halftime deficit to defeat Vermont, 77-71, Sunday night in the Championship Game of the Springfield Bracket at the Hall of Fame Tipoff Tournament. The Bulls are now 3-2 on the season.
RICHMOND, Ky. -- The Ball State men’s basketball team found itself in a similar position Sunday to the one it faced only a day earlier.
A double-digit second-half lead evaporated, and the Cardinals were locked in a tie game down the stretch. But just as it did Saturday against Longwood, Ball State regained control and pulled away, this time for a 72-60 win over South Carolina State. The victory polished off a 2-1 weekend at the @EKUHoops Classic at Eastern Kentucky’s McBrayer Arena and left BSU 3-2 on the young season. VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Akron Zips fell 75-56 against the No. 11 ranked Villanova Wildcats on Sunday at the Pavilion in Villanova, Pa. The Zips (3-1) led by as many as eight points, but they couldn't hold on as the Wildcats (4-0) handed Akron its first loss of the season.
By MIKE SMITH OXFORD, Ohio – Even at this early stage of the season, it can be a good sign when a team knocks off an undefeated opponent. The Miami RedHawks did that Sunday, coming back in the second half to defeat Northeastern 67-61 at Millett Hall. The Huskies, who reached the NCAA tournament last year, were off to a 4-0 start this season. Two of the wins came Friday and Saturday as part of the Men Against Breast Cancer Challenge being hosted by Miami. The RedHawks won their first game, but faltered Saturday against Florida Atlantic. Two issues undermined Miami in the loss to FAU: A lack of rebounds and a lack of free throws. The RedHawks improved to varying degrees in both areas Sunday. Although Northeastern owned a 33-27 rebounding advantage against MU, the RedHawks were aggressive enough on the boards to keep a strong Huskies lineup from doing more damage. Miami also got back to the free throw line, converting 21 of 29. That was nearly twice the charity stripe production of the previous day (11 of 16). FORT MEYERS, Fla -- Bowling Green State University had five players score in double figures in a 79-72 win over Youngstown State on Sunday evening in the two teams' second game of the 2015 Hilton Garden Inn FGCU Classic at Alico Arena in Fort Myers, Fla. The two teams combined to drain 22 three-pointers in the 40 minute contest. The Falcons shot 45.6 percent (26-of-57) overall from the floor, including going 8-of-18 (44.4 percent) from behind the three-point line in the win. BGSU also dished out a total of 16 assists in the victory, a season-high for the Falcons. Land at No. 24 after defeating rival Falcons Toledo, OH – After a two-week absence, the Toledo Rockets are back in the Top 25. Following a 44-28 victory over Bowling Green on Nov. 17, the Rockets moved up to No.24 in the latest Associated Press media poll with 123 points, one spot ahead of Temple and one behind Mississippi State. Toledo also received 69 points in the latest USA Today coaches poll, good for an unofficial ranking of 27th. The Rockets were ranked in the Top 25 for five weeks this season from Oct. 4-Nov.1, rising as high as No. 19 in the AP poll and No. 20 in the coaches poll before a loss to Northern Illinois on Nov. 3 knocked them out of the Top 25. Toledo (9-1, 6-1 MAC) hosts Western Michigan (6-5, 5-2 MAC) on Friday with a chance to earn at least a share of the MAC West Division crown. DEKALB, Ill. -- Freshman Marshawn Wilson scored a game-high 17 points as the Northern Illinois Huskies defeated Eureka, 100-52, on Saturday afternoon at the NIU Convocation Center. The Huskies dished out a school-record 32 assists on 39 field goals in the contest, including a career-best 10 from freshman Laytwan Porter .
With the victory, NIU improves to 4-0 for the first time since the 1994-95 season when the Huskies won their first nine games to start the season. NIU’s 32 assists betters the previous school-record of 31 set against Chicago State on Dec. 7, 1995. Porter’s 10 assists is the first 10-plus assist game by a Huskie since Mike DiNunno recorded 10 against Western Michigan on Jan. 13, 2010. WILMINGTON, N.C.- Western Michigan dropped a hard-fought 80-76 loss at defending Colonial Athletic Association champion UNCW on the road Saturday, 80-76.
The Broncos led by 10 in the first half and 45-38 at halftime, but the Seahawks’ pressure in the second half helped UNCW pull out the four-point win in front of a home crowd of 4,019. |
