Alcegaire sparks Falcons in win over Miami

BOWLING GREEN -- Senior guard Wes Alcegaire erupted for a career-high 25 points as Bowling Green broke a two-game slide by defeating Miami 83-72 Tuesday at the Stroh Center.

 
It was the second win for BGSU (9-13, 3-6 MAC) over its last seven outings. Miami, meanwhile, lost for the sixth time in eight games, and the RedHawks (9-13, 2-7 MAC) remained winless on the road this season.

-- It’s one thing to see Eastern Michigan’s defense on video and another thing to actually play against it. Prepare as they might, the young Miami RedHawks got a first hand look at the Eagles Saturday, and EMU left an impression.

Eastern Michigan (13-8, 5-3 MAC) held Miami (9-12, 2-6 MAC) to 35.1 percent from the field and got a big night from James Thompson IV on the way to a 74-57 victory over MU. It was the Eagles first win in Oxford since 1996.

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Ohio Bobcats (13-6, 5-3 MAC) sank a season-high 18 three-pointers en route to a 96-72 blowout win over Mid-American Conference East Division rival Bowling Green (8-13, 2-6 MAC) on Saturday at the Stroh Center.

The Bobcats' victory put a halt to a four-game losing skid in the series with the Falcons. The 24-point win also marked Ohio's largest margin of victory in a conference road game since racing past MAC West Division foe Ball State by 27 points, 69-42, on Feb. 6, 2013, in Muncie, Ind.

TOLEDO, Ohio – Five players scored in double figures, led by 15 from senior Marin Maric, as the Northern Illinois Huskies claimed a 74-72 road win over Toledo on Saturday afternoon at Savage Arena.
 
Sophomore Laytwan Porter added 12 points, seniors Dontel Highsmith and Aaric Armstead each had 11 points and sophomore Levi Bradley chipped in 10 as NIU shot 48.3 percent (28-of-58) from the field, including 50 percent (7-of-14) from beyond the arc.

Cardinals on target in win over WMU

MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State Cardinals celebrated 25 years of Worthen Arena Saturday afternoon by defeating rival Western Michigan 84-78 to maintain a share of the top spot in the league’s West Division.
 
Tayler Persons led three Cardinals in double figures with 24 points on 9-of-11 shooting. Franko House scored 18 points, and Sean Sellers added 12.

Junior Marcus Keene scored 41 points, including 11 in overtime, as the Central Michigan Chippewas defeated the Kent State Golden Flashes 105-98 Saturday afternoon at the MAC Center.

Central Michigan (13-7, 3-4 MAC) extended its winning streak to three games while collecting its first Mid-American Conference road win. It was also the Chippewas first road victory since December 21st at Montana State.

Senior Kwan Cheatham scored a career high 31 points, going 7-of-13 from three-point range, as the Akron Zips withstood a fierce challenge from the Buffalo Bulls to pick up a 91-90 victory Saturday night befoare a near capacity crowd of 4,884 at Rhodes Arena.

With the victory, Akron (18-3, 8-0) remains the only undefeated team in Mid-American Conference play as the MAC schedule nears the halfway mark. In addition, UA collected its 11th consecutive victory overall and 28th straight at home -- the third longest current home winning skein in Division I.

Hunt snares Senior Bowl award

MOBILE, Ala -- Former Toledo running back Kareem Hunt ran for 118 yards on 15 carries and was named the North’s Most Outstanding Player at the 2017 Reese’s Senior Bowl in Mobile, AL on Saturday, Jan. 28.  Hunt had runs of 43, 20, and 18 yards and also caught an 11-yard pass.
 
The South defeated the North, 16-15, in the 68th annual contest, which was played at Ladd-Peebles Stadium, the site of one of Hunt’s greatest games as a Rocket. Hunt rushed for a career-best 271 yards and five touchdowns as a sophomore in a 63-44 victory at the GoDaddy Bowl on Jan. 4, 2015.
 
Hunt is Toledo’s all-time leading rusher with 4,945 yards.
 

Former Rocket tight end Michael Roberts also played in the game, catching one pass for four yards.

Kent State reverses verdict in NIU rematch

DEKALB, Ill. –Kent State (11-9, 3-4 MAC) evened the score against the Northern Illinois Huskies (12-8, 4-3 MAC), 73-66, on the road Tuesday.
 
"A lot of the issues we had the first time we played them, we focused on and corrected," noted head coach Rob Senderoff. "We were plus on rebounding, 10 less turnovers than last time and gave ourselves a chance to win. Our point guard play was off the charts. We had big minutes all around. This was a great road win for us."

ATHENS, OH – Senior forward Steve Taylor tallied a game-high 25 points and 15 rebounds on Tuesday evening to lead Toledo to a 79-76 road win over Ohio. The victory was the Rockets’ second-straight win in the “Convo” and improves UT’s overall record to 10-8 overall and 4-3 in conference play.

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.-  The backcourt tandem of Marcus Keene and Braylon Rayson combined for 55 points as Central Michigan defeated Bowling Green 82-76 Tuesday at McGuirk Arena.
 
Keene, the nation’s top scorer, tallied 28 points on 7 of 20 shooting, while adding 11 points from the free throw line. The junior transfer was coming off a Division I-best 50 point performance Saturday against Miami (OH).

OXFORD, OH -- Dion Wade registered just one point for the Miami RedHawks Tuesday, but it was a really big point.
 
The junior hit one of two free throws with 1.4 seconds left to lift Miami over Buffalo, 75-74, at Millett Hall.  Buffalo pulled down the missed second try and called time out, but it was unable to get a shot off in time as Miami (9-11, 2-5 MAC) held on for its second win of the season.
