6/27/2015

Brooklyn, New York – Former Bowling Green State University men's basketball standout Richaun Holmes was selected at pick No. 37 by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2015 National Basketball Association (NBA) Draft on Thursday night.

"I'm just going to work hard and be a contributor to the team," commented Holmes. "I'm going to keep working and keep doing the things that got me here and even more so now. I'm going to continue to work hard to show people that I belong in the NBA."

By being chosen in this year's NBA Draft, Holmes becomes the first BGSU Falcon to be drafted since Antonio Daniels was picked fourth overall by the Vancouver Grizzlies (Memphis Grizzlies) back in the 1997 draft.

He also becomes the first NBA draft pick from the Mid-American Conference (MAC) since both Chris Kaman and Brandon Hunter were each selected in the 2003 NBA Draft. Kaman was selected by the Los Angeles Clippers as the sixth overall pick out of Central Michigan, while Hunter went 56th overall to the Boston Celtics from Ohio.

Cleveland, Ohio – The Mid-American Conference has announced an updated version of the 2015 football schedule, with kick times and television for the first three weeks of the regular season and much of the midweek October and November games slated for national television distribution. All remaining game kick times and television will be announced 12 days prior to the scheduled games.

Highlighting the schedule will be 16 midweek nationally televised games during the months of October and November slated for national television on ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN3 and CBS Sports Network as the conference race unfolds in both the East and West divisions.

The regular season will conclude with the 19th Marathon MAC Football Championship game on Friday, Dec. 4 at 8:00 pm ET at Ford Field in Detroit on ESPN2.  This will mark the 12th Marathon MAC Football Championship game at Ford Field, home of the Detroit Lions, Super Bowl XL, and the 2009 NCAA Men’s Final Four.

For the eighth year in a row, league schools will face a formidable non-conference slate of opponents from the following Football Bowl Subdivision conferences – ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12, SEC and Notre Dame. In addition, the conference will also face opponents from the American Athletic Conference, Conference USA, Mountain West Conference, Sun Belt Conference and Independent Army.

MAC programs will face five non-conference foes that finished in the final AP Top 25 poll: Ohio State (1), Michigan State (5), Wisconsin (13), Marshall (23) and Memphis (25).  MAC programs will twice face National Champion Ohio State as NIU plays in Columbus on Sept. 19 and Western Michigan on Sept. 26.  Also, Western Michigan will host Michigan State in its season opener on Friday, Sept. 4 at Waldo Stadium in Kalamazoo, Mich.

Group claims violation of U.S. Constitution
TOLEDO, Oh – University of Toledo head football coach Matt Campbell will be back at the helm this year, once again attempting to take the Rockets to a Mid-American Conference football title. It appears, however, he will not be leading the team in any pre-game prayers.

Armed with a video clip from a Rockets game in 2012, the Freedom from Religion Foundation (a Wisconsin-based nonprofit) complained last month that Campbell led the team in the Lord’s Prayer before that 2012 game. Such action, it said, violated the U.S. Constitution (separation of church and state).

Campbell issued a statement this week indicating future mental preparations will take a more individual direction.

NCAA adopts 30-second clock, other changes.

6/9/2015

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel has approved a package of proposals and identified several areas of focus for men’s basketball effective in the 2015-16 season.

Among the changes is a 30-second shot clock, which is part of an effort to improve pace of play and offense – particularly after Division I men’s basketball scoring dropped to 67.6 ppg last season. That approached historic lows. The shot clock was last reduced for the 1993-94 season, when it dropped from 45 seconds to 35.

Another change involves time outs, with each team getting one fewer stoppage – four instead of five. Only three can be carried over to the second half.

Other pace of play items include:

Cleveland, Ohio – The Mid-American Conference has extended the contract of Commissioner Dr. Jon Steinbrecher for three additional years through the 2019-20 academic year.  Steinbrecher began as MAC Commissioner in May of 2009 and this marks his second contract extension as the conference presidents unanimously rewarded Steinbrecher with another three-year contract extension.

During his term as MAC Commissioner, Steinbrecher has brought long-term security for the Conference through partnership in the new College Football Playoff, national television rights deals, greatly increased national television exposure, expanded bowl opportunities, stabilized conference membership and enhanced neutral site conference championships with long-term agreements for football and men’s and women’s basketball tournaments.
