MAC announces Week Four POTW

9/29/2014

Picture
The Mid-American conference on Monday announced its Week Four football Players of the Week. The players are:
MAC East: Quarterback Blake Frohnapfel (UMass), linebacker Jatavis Brown (Akron) and kicker Tyler Tate (Bowling Green).
MAC West: Quarterback Logan Woodside, defensive back Ronald Zamort (Western Michigan) and punter Ron Coluzzi  (Central Michigan).

East Division

Offensive Player of the Week:  UMass QB Blake Frohnapfel
UMass quarterback Blake Frohnapfel (Stafford, Va.) threw for a career-high, a UMass and MAC single-game record 589 yards in a 47-42 loss to Bowling Green. He also tied the UMass school record for touchdowns in a game with five. The graduate student connected on 36-of-61 attempts hitting nine different receivers. The 589 yards passing are the second most nationally for a single game this season and were just four shy of the No. 1 spot. Frohnapfel now ranks 7th nationally in total passing yards this season with 1,471 yards. Since 2004, only nine times has an FBS quarterback thrown for 569 yards or more in a game. The 589 yards is also a new Mid-American Conference record.

Defensive Player of the Week:  Akron LB Jatavis Brown
Akron junior linebacker Jatavis Brown (Belle Glade, Fla.) led the Zips’ defense with 11 tackles, including a career-high nine solo stops, and a sack for a loss of eight yards in a 21-10 win at Pittsburgh.  A starter in all four games, Brown is the Zips’ top defender with 30 tackles, including a team-best 19 solo stops, 4.0 TFL, a sack, a forced fumble, and a break-up.

Special Teams Player of the Week:  Bowling Green K Tyler Tate
Bowling Green junior Tyler Tate (Carroll, Ohio) continued an impressive season on Saturday at UMass, helping the Falcons to a 47-42 victory with his 11 points. Tate recorded five points on extra point attempts, and added six more on two field goal makes of 21 and 33 yards. Tate is now 8-of-10 on field goal attempts this season, following a 2-for-2 day at UMass.

West Division

Offensive Player of the Week:  Toledo QB Logan Woodside
Toledo sophomore quarterback Logan Woodside (Frankfort, Ky.) completed 23-of-34 passes for a career-high 339 yards and two touchdowns in a 42-28 win over Central Michigan at the Glass Bowl. Woodside’s previous best effort was 322 yards at Cincinnati on Sept. 12.

Defensive Player of the Week:  Western Michigan DB Ronald Zamort
Western Michigan junior defensive back Ronald Zamort (Delray Beach, Fla.) had three tackles, one interception for 39 yards, one pass break up and two passes defensed in a 35-17 loss at Virginia Tech.  Zamort picked off a Michael Webber pass and returned it 39 yards to the Virginia Tech three yard line to help set up Western Michigan's first touchdown in the 35-17 loss at Virginia Tech. The interception was his second of the season and the second time a turnover created by him has led directly to a touchdown. Zamort also had a pass break up to go with his three tackles. After the two passes defended in the game it brought his season total to eight, best in the MAC and tied for third-best in the country.

Special Teams Player of the Week:  Central Michigan P Ron Coluzzi
Central Michigan sophomore punter Ron Coluzzi (Naperville, Ill.) had three punts over 50 yards in a 42-28 loss at Toledo, averaging 52.7 yards per kick. Coluzzi hit a career-long 55 yarder in the second quarter of the game. The sophomore also placed all three punts inside the 30 and two inside the 20.

PITTSBURGH – Junior running back Conor Hundley rushed for a career-best 148 yards as the Akron Zips came into Heinz Field Saturday afternoon and upset the Pittsburgh Panthers, 21-10, ending a two-game Akron losing streak.

“Give Akron credit today. They came to play.” Panthers head man Paul Chryst said afterward. “They did things in the course of the game to win it, and we didn’t.”

Akron (2-2) picked up its first win over a team from one of the ‘Power Five’ Conferences since September 6, 2008 when UA defeated Syracuse 42-28.  That win over the Orange was also Akron’s last non-conference road victory until Saturday.

Licata, Taylor help Buffalo hold off RedHawks

9/28/2014

BUFFALO, NY --
Buffalo’s Joe Licata and Anthone Taylor proved too much for visiting Miami as the Bulls posted a 35-27 win over the RedHawks Saturday at UB Stadium.

It was a much different game than last year’s 44-7 UB blowout in Oxford, the some things remained the same. The Buffalo offensive line gave Licata enough time to scan his receiving options and he responded by completing 28 of 38 for 276 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions.

The Bulls line also helped junior running back Anthone Taylor set a new career high as he carried 36 times for 222 yards and three touchdowns – all in the second half as Buffalo came back twice – once from a 21-14 deficit and once from a 27-26 margin.

"It was a tough battle tonight, but it was a lot of fun to secure that win," head coach Jeff Quinn said. "I was really pleased with our leadership. We came in at halftime and really challenged them. A couple key guys stepped up for us and it really impacted our entire team.

Flashes turnovers turn tide at UVA

9/27/2014

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – A flurry of turnovers spoiled Kent State's hopes of capturing its first win of the 2014 season with an upset at the University of Virginia's Scott Stadium.

The Golden Flashes gave the Cavaliers a battle for the better part of three quarters before Virginia finally pulled away for a 45-13 win by taking advantage of five Kent State giveaways.

"We talk all of the time about how the ball is the program," said Kent State head coach Paul Haynes. "There is no way you can turn the ball over five times and win against a quality opponent … You can't beat two teams on Saturday. You can only beat one. And right now we are beating ourselves."

A couple of Saturday’s ago down in Columbus, the Kent State Golden Flashes suffered one of their worst losses in many seasons as they were totally outclassed by the Ohio State Buckeyes 66-0. It was the most points given up, as well as the largest margin of defeat, by a KSU team since 1977 at South Carolina.

The Blue and Gold are 0-3 for the first time since the 2000 season and now look to rebound as they travel to scenic Charlottesville for a battle with the Virginia Cavaliers.

Last Saturday at InfoCision Stadium, the Akron Zips ran into college football’s version of a buzz saw in the Marshall Thundering Herd. The Blue and Gold allowed 48 points, 526 yards of total offense and committed four turnovers as they saw their four game home winning streak come to a screeching halt.

This Saturday, the Zips look to end a two-game losing streak as they make the short trek east to Pittsburgh to face a 3-1 Panthers squad out of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Pitt lost at home to Iowa last week after leading for much of the game.

MRO MAC Football Power Rankings – Sept. 25

9/25/2014

Picture
Hurray! It’s here!!

It’s time for the first installment of the 2014 MAC Reporter Online football power rankings. The preseason media poll is always a starting point. But we’ve found it prudent beyond that to wait until most of the non-conference action is done to start the weekly power rankings.

That said, non-conference play has clarified some things and muddied others. Take the top, for instance, Bowling Green was a pretty clear favorite in the preseason media poll. But the Falcons stumbled right out of the gate with a loss at Western Kentucky. In the process, they loss all-MAC quarterback Matt Johnson.
Doomed, right?
Wrong! All they did was demolish VMI the next week and knock off Indiana at home in a Week Three thriller.
Juggernaut, right?
Wrong again! Wisconsin (No. 19) used its vaunted running game to batter BG, 68-17.
In short, the Falcons have majored in mixed messages through four games.  Let’s take a look at where they – and others – landed in this week’s MRO Power Rankings.

MAC has piece of playoff, premier bowl opportunity pie

9/25/2014

Beginning with the 2014-15 season, college football will enter a new four-team playoff era. Two College Football Playoff Semifinals will be played in bowl games this year (Sugar Bowl; Rose Bowl) and the College Football Playoff National Championship will be played in Arlington, Texas on Jan. 12.

The two Semifinals and four other premier bowl games (Orange Bowl; Cotton Bowl; Peach Bowl; Fiesta Bowl) will be played on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. The Semifinal games will rotate among these six different bowls.  All MAC programs will join every FBS team in college football with equal access to the playoff based upon its performance. No team will qualify automatically.

The College Football Playoff Selection Committee will choose four teams for the playoffs based on body of work, strength of schedule, head-to-head results, comparison of results against common opponents, championships won and other factors. The highest ranked program by the Selection Committee from either the MAC, American Athletic, Conference USA, Mountain West or Sun Belt Conferences will play annually in one of the premier bowl games.

For the first time ever, the Ohio Bobcats will take on the Eastern Illinois Panthers this Saturday  at Peden Stadium on the banks of the Hocking River. Both teams are coming off home victories last weekend.

It will be interesting to see how Ohio quarterback J.D. Sprague fairs in his first collegiate start after captain Derrius Vick went down with a knee injury last week.

Sprague will get his opportunity against a Panthers squad on the rebound after losing head coach DIno Babers (now at Bowling Green) and Walter Payton Award winner Jimmy Garoppolo  (now with New England Patriots) from last year's 12-2 team. Garoppolo broke several of Tony Romo's school passing records  while guiding EIU into the Football Bowl Subdivision playoff quarterfinals.

Huskies WR Lewis done for season

9/23/2014

PictureTommylee Lewis
DEKALB, Ill. –Northern Illinois University wide receiver and return specialist Tommylee Lewis will miss the remainder of the 2014 season due to a lower body injury, NIU head coach Rod Carey announced today.

Lewis, a senior from Riviera Beach, Fla. (W.T. Dwyer HS) who was named to the Paul Hornung Award Watch List, played in the Huskies’ first two games of the season before being sidelined. Lewis played as a true freshman in 2010 and has never been redshirted. At the end of the season, NIU can apply for a medical hardship waiver through the Mid-American Conference.

In 39 career games, Lewis has accounted 3,617 all-purpose yards for the Huskies.  His career totals include 558 rushing yards on 63 carries for an 8.9-yard average, 138 catches for 1,282 yards and eight touchdowns and 1,656 career kickoff return yards with four scores.  He caught four passes for 28 yards and rushed six times for 17 yards in NIU’s wins over Presbyterian and Northwestern this year.

In sneakers or cleats, Miami’s ‘Q’ enjoys the ‘pick’

PictureQuinten Rollins (Courtesy of Miami Athletics)
By MIKE SMITH
Former Miami basketball coach Charlie Coles only got a brief look at Quinten Rollins on the football field. He saw enough, however, to once remark that Rollins might be an even better football player than a basketball player.

Rollins, Miami and MAC fans are now getting a chance to compare the two roles following Rollins’ decision earlier this year to pursue football with a final eligibility opportunity.

With just one season at his disposal, some might have viewed Rollins’ move as merely an attempt to spend a little time on the football side. He, of course, had no crystal ball to show what might transpire. What he did have was a highly competitive nature and interest in football – even after four years of basketball.

Coles managed to land Rollins, who earned prep state honors in basketball after a standout career at Wilmington (Ohio) High School. Once at Miami, he quickly made his mark on the hoops scene. Rollins was the first freshman to start in a Miami season opener since 2003-2004. At season’s end, he was tabbed with Miami Defensive Player of the Year honors.

Although the 6-0 point guard made numerous contributions over his four years on the hardwood, Rollins earned particular praise for his work as a defender. During his senior season, he ranked 14th nationally and led the MAC in steals (2.4 spg).

Just a few months later, Rollins is again among MAC leaders in steals – of a different type. Through four games, he has four interceptions. The first came in Game Two against Eastern Kentucky. He grabbed another and earned MAC East Player of the Week honors following his work against Michigan – not bad for somebody in his first year of collegiate football.
