When handshakes turn ugly . . .

After the recent "assault" incident at a Bowling Green vs. Memphis WNIT game, I am revisiting my own personal debate about postgame handshake lines.

I really have strong feeling for and against the tradition, but the practical side of my brain is certainly threatening to take charge. If it does, that would be in favor of discontinuing what should be a simple act of sportsmanship.

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Todd Simon, the head coach at Southern Utah for the past seven years, is the new head men's basketball coach at Bowling Green State University, according to Director of Athletics Derek van der Merwe

Toledo to tangle with Michigan in NIT opener

TOLEDO, Ohio - The Toledo men's basketball team (27-7, 16-2 MAC) will continue its historic season when it travels to Ann Arbor, Mich. to meet Michigan (17-15, 11-9 Big Ten) in a first-round National Invitation Tournament matchup on Tuesday, March 14. The contest will be televised on ESPN2 and tip off in the Crisler Center at 7:00 p.m.

Flashes will open NCAA journey against Indiana

KENT, Ohio - The Kent State University men's basketball team has been selected as a 13th seed in the 2023 NCAA Tournament, facing the fourth seed Indiana at the MVP Arena in Albany, New York Friday, March 17.

Tip time is set for 9:55 p.m. ET and will air live on TBS. The winner of Kent State's game will move on to the second round on Sunday, March 19 against Miami FL, or Drake.

Swarming Flashes snag tourney title, NCAA spot

KSU defense helps end 17-game Toledo win streak

CLEVELAND, OH -- There are multiple reasons why Kent State led the MAC in field goal percentage defense this year, and KSU flashed some serious samples of those reasons Saturday when the No. 2 seed knocked off No. 1 seed Toledo 93-78 in the MAC Tournament championship game at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.

Kent State (28-6) limited Toledo (27-7) to 78 points (nearly seven points below its season average) and 42.4 percent from the field. The Rockets hit an average of 49.9 percent for the season.

Buffalo basketball to replace Whitesell

BUFFALO, NY - University at Buffalo Vice President and Director of Athletics Mark Alnutt announced today that Jim Whitesell will not be returning as head men's basketball coach.

"At this time, we felt it was necessary to make a change in leadership of our men’s basketball program,” Alnutt said. “We want to thank Jim for his eight years at UB, including the last four as our head coach. We wish he and Connie nothing but the very best moving forward.”

MAC announces 2022-23 Postseason Awards

Cleveland, Ohio - The Mid-American Conference on Wednesday announced the All-MAC Teams & Specialty Award selections for the 2022-23 season. All of the awards were voted on by the league's 12 head coaches, with coaches not being able to vote for their own student-athletes.

Toledo’s RayJ Dennis was a unanimous selection for MAC Player of the Year, while Rockets Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk earned Coach of the Year accolades for the second time in the past three seasons. Central Michigan’s Reggie Bass was tabbed Freshman of the Year, while Kent State's Malique Jacobs (Defensive Player of the Year) & Jalen Sullinger (Sixth Man of the Year) rounded out this year's specialty award selections.
