MRO Preview: Central Michigan at Western Michigan

There will be an extra measure of incentive for seniors on both sides of Wednesday’s Central Michigan at Western Michigan Battle for the Cannon in Kalamazoo.

The Broncos are seeking their fourth straight win in the series. If successful, this year’s seniors would be the first WMU group to go undefeated over a four-year career.

Halloween season a special time of year in Athens, Ohio, where revelers descend upon the community to join in a massive celebration of ... well, any number of things, including the season.

With the 2017 Halloween Block Party already done, there remains one more opportunity for considerable celebration. That would be at Peden Stadium on Tuesday when the Miami RedHawks battle hosting Ohio University in another Battle of the Bricks.

Broncos, Bulls get basketball preseason nod

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Western Michigan Broncos & Buffalo Bulls have been selected to win their respective divisions in the 2017-18 MAC Men's Basketball Preseason Poll. The poll was determined by the league’s 12 head coaches & an 18-member MAC News Media Panel.

Western Michigan received 22 first place votes when it came to picking who would win the West crown, while the Bulls received 24 first place votes to take home the East title.

Rockets rumble past Ball State

MUNCIE, Ind. – Sophomore wide receiver Diontae Johnson scored three touchdowns and senior quarterback Logan Woodside threw for 267 yards and three scores as Toledo rolled to a 58-17 victory over Ball State in Muncie on Thursday.
It was the most points for the Rockets since a 63-20 victory over Eastern Michigan on Oct. 17, 2015.

Huskies edge EMU with frantic comeback, OT

DEKALB, Ill. – Trailing Eastern Michigan by two touchdowns with less than a quarter of football to play, the Northern Illinois University Huskies staged a furious comeback to claim a 30-27 overtime victory over the Eagles at Huskie Stadium Thursday night.

Tailback Marcus Jones scored on a nine-yard touchdown run to give NIU the win, after the Huskies’ defense held EMU to a 35-yard field goal on its overtime possession.

The Mid-American Conference moves into weeknight play this week with two games Thursday and just on contest this Saturday.

Last Saturday’s full slate, however, included some drubbings that probably played a part in today’s rankings. While wins and losses are the bottom line, there are some occasions when scores can creep into the picture.

Most of last week’s top five teams took care of business – some in a big way – so there was minimal change up top. From six through 12, however, there was plenty of movement.

The Mid-American Conference on Monday announced its Week Eight Football Players of the Week.
East Division honorees are: Kenny Young (Miami), Chad Moore (Ohio) and Louie Zervos (Ohio).
West Division honorees are: Logan Woodside (Toledo), Joe Ostman (Central Michigan), Jameson Vest (Toledo) and Christian Hagan (Northern Illinois).

Bobcats maul Kent State for sixth win

ATHENS, Ohio -- Ohio redshirt senior running back Dorian Brown ran for a touchdown and broke 100 yards for the first time this season, while sophomore quarterback Nathan Rourke passed for two touchdowns as Ohio defeated Kent State 48-3 on Saturday at Peden Stadium.
Brown finished with 108 yards on 13 carries, the highlight being a 39-yard touchdown run up the middle late in the third quarter.

There were times this season when the Miami RedHawks were like the Olympic skater -- performing well, only to lose an edge and crash into the boards in the final seconds.
The RedHawks got their edge back Saturday, knocking off Buffalo 24-14 behind a strong running attack and physical defense that forced two turnovers. With MU managing to play a turnover-free game, it was a recipe for success.

Chippewas blast struggling Ball State

MUNCIE, Ind. – Central Michigan football coach John Bonamego said his team re-committed itself to the run this week in practice.

It paid off. The Chippewas rushed for a season-high 256 yards in dominating Ball State, 56-9, to spoil the Cardinals’ homecoming at Scheumann Stadium on Saturday.
