RedHawks ‘recover’ to extend Akron road woes

There’s a nasty virus going around that pretty much kicks both butt and gut for 24 hours. That’s followed by a small “recovery” period as the afflicted try to regain their “norm.”
​
One might say the Miami RedHawks were able to condense that “recovery” phase into half of the first half Tuesday night. Regaining their form allowed them to rally past visiting Akron 79-64 at Millett Hall.

Kent State rallies to end Buffalo streak

KENT, OHIO –
The Kent State Golden Flashes pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the 2017-18 Mid-American Conference basketball season as they defeated the Buffalo Bulls 82-79 Tuesday night at the MAC Center

Kent State (11-10, 6-3 MAC) came back from an 18-point deficit in the first half, putting together a 20-4 run over the final 6:25 of the second half to pull off the victory.

Rockets roar past BG; win streak hits seven

TOLEDO, Ohio - Toledo (15-6, 7-1 MAC) made an incredible 12 shots in a row during a game-deciding stretch in the first half on its way to a resounding 101-75 triumph over Bowling Green (12-9, 3-5 MAC) on Saturday night before a season-high 6,812 fans in Savage Arena. 

The margin of victory was the Rockets' largest ever in the 171-game series history and extended UT's winning streak to a season-high seven games.

OXFORD, Ohio --
Eastern Michigan's signature zone defense is a tough enough challenge for those who have experienced it. Insert a young opponent who has never faced the Eagles and ... well, you could get something like what happened Saturday at Millett Hall. Eastern Michigan applied a double-dose of its zone and left Oxford with a 58-48 win over the Miami RedHawks.

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Kevin Zabo and Jaylin Walker led a second-half surge as Kent State battled back to capture an 84-76 victory at Central Michigan on Saturday.

The decision secured the Golden Flashes' first road win in Mid-American Conference play this season. KSU raised its record to 11-9, 5-3 MAC. Central Michigan fell to 13-8, 2-6 MAC.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan shot 60 percent from the field in the second half and 53.8 percent overall to defeat Northern Illinois 79-72 inside University Arena Saturday.

The win snapped WMU’s three-game losing streak as WMU improved its overall record to 12-9 and 4-4 in Mid-American Conference play. Northern Illinois slipped to 10-11 (3-5 MAC) after losing for the third time over it's last four outings.

ATHENS, OH –- Buffalo ran its winning streak to nine games and remained undefeated in MAC play with a 73-66 win over Ohio on Friday night at the Convocation Center in Athens. 

UB led wire-to-wire in the contest as it improved to 16-5 on the season and 8-0 in the MAC. Buffalo is now just the third MAC team since 2005 to start a season 8-0. Ohio lost for the fifth time in its last six outings, falling to 9-11, 2-6 MAC.

AKRON, Ohio – A career night from freshman center Mark Kostelac and a big night from beyond the arc powered the Akron Zips to their second straight win as they held off the Ohio Bobcats 71-68 in Mid-American Conference action Tuesday night at James A. Rhodes Arena.

Kostelac, who eclipsed 20 minutes of playing time for the third straight contest, scored several key baskets late in the game on his way to 10 points and three rebounds.

Visiting Miami held Central Michigan to 17 points under its season average on the way to a 70-61 win Tuesday at McGuirk Arena.
It was the second straight win for MU, which raised its record to 11-9 overall (4-3 MAC). The RedHawks impressed last Saturday against Ball State and led nearly the entire game in defeating CMU.
