MAC issues statement on WMU vs Michigan ending/result

Official Statement Regarding Western Michigan - Michigan Football Game
From MAC Commissioner Dr. Jon Steinbrecher

After further study and investigation, it is now evident that replay protocol was not properly followed in determining whether time remained on the game clock at the conclusion of the Western Michigan vs. Michigan football game.

The established replay protocol requires that the game clock displayed on the program feed be used in determining whether time remained. Instead, the Big Ten Conference replay crew relied upon the clock feed embedded within its replay system. As a result, one second was placed back on the game clock and an additional play was awarded.

This was not a judgment regarding the proper amount of time to place on the clock. It was an error in the application of the established replay protocol governing this specific end-of-game timing situation. Had the protocol been properly followed and the program-feed clock been used, no additional play would have been awarded, and Western Michigan would have won the game, 12–7.

As a result, the Mid-American Conference has submitted formal appeals to the NCAA FBS Oversight Committee and the College Football Playoff. The MAC is requesting that those bodies recognize Western Michigan as the actual winner of the game for purposes of their respective rankings, evaluations and selection deliberations, and take such other corrective action as may be within their authority.

Kim guides Eagles past newest MAC football member

YPSILANTI, MI -- Quarterback Noah Kim ran for one TD and passed for another during a 21-point second quarter rally to lead hosting Eastern Michigan past Sacramento State 28-17 Saturday at Rynearson Stadium.
It was the first FBS and Mid-American Conference game for Sacramento State (0-1, 0-1 MAC), which scored 10 points in the second period. Both teams added seven more points in the final stanza.

Kim completed 27-of-38 pass . . .

NCAA Division I play opens Saturday with eight games on tap. Among them is Sacramento State at Eastern Michigan. For the former, it marks the Hornets' first:
-- Division I game
-- Mid-American Conference contest
It's likely Sacramento State's first game on gray turf, as well. But that's what comes with Rynearson Stadium. The Eagles were ranked seventh in this year's MAC preseason coaches poll. Sac State, meanwhile, was 12th among 13 teams.

New MAC basketball format awards byes to top four

The Mid-American Conference Men's Basketball Tournament will move to a different format this year.
Jon Rothstein is among those reporting that the new format will:

• No. 1 and No. 2 seeds will receive byes into the semifinal round.
• No. 3 and No. 4 seeds will receive byes into the quarterfinal round.

The new format would reward regular season success for the top four teams.

Last year, Miami went undefeated during the regular season (conference and non-conference), but was upset by UMass in MAC tourney opening round action. Akron went on to win the tournament, thus earning an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. MU did manage to get a spot in the NCAA's First Four games in Dayton, where it defeated Tennessee. The RedHawks then fell to Tennessee in the round of 64.

MAC announces 2026-27 conference schedule

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Mid-American Conference has announced the 2026-27 MAC Men's Basketball Conference Schedule.

The conference season is set to tip off on Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2026. MAC Men's Basketball teams will play 22 games over 12 weeks (eleven home, eleven away).

The Men's Basketball regular season will conclude on Friday, March 5, with the top eight teams in the conference moving on to Cleveland’s Rocket Arena for the MAC Men’s Basketball Tournament on March 10-13.

The conference office will release a full Men’s Basketball television schedule in October.

It's seldom an easy path to the MAC championship game, but Miami had a particularly rocky road to reach last year's championship tilt.
MU's biggest hurdle was the in-season loss of quarterback Dequan Finn -- not to injury, but to ... "preparing for the NFL draft."
The former Toledo Rocket and MAC Offensive Player of the Year came to Miami after a season at Baylor. He saw action in eight games, leading MU to a 4-4 record (4-1 MAC) before pulling the plug.

Curtis-led Rockets will lean on transfers in 2026

This is a year of change for Toledo.
The Rockets have a new head coach and a roster replete with transfer talent. While there could be some "system" changes, as well, HQ Mike Jacobs seems confident new schemes/terminology will translate.
Jason Candle, who joined Toledo as an assistant in 2009, eventually guided UT from 2016-2025. His Rocket squads compiled an 81-44 overall record and went 54-25 in Mid-American Conference play. The 2017 group reigned as MAC champs.
After an 8-4 (6-2 MAC) record in 2025, Candle accepted the head coaching position at Connecticut.

Reloading Ohio lurks as 2026 MAC darkhose

After winning a MAC title in 2024, the Ohio Bobcats came whisper close to a third MAC Championship game apearance in three years in 2025. While their 6-2 conference record equaled rival Miami and Toledo -- one game behind Western Michigan -- Miami advanced on a tiebreaker.
Shortly before Ohio's bowl game against UNLV, the school suddenly dismissed head coach Brian Smith. Moving into that position was defensive coordinator John Hauser.

Head Coach Matt Drinkel's Chippewas made a five-win jump in his first year at the helm and CMU could flirt with another (even better??) run in 2026. The offensive side owns more experience this time around. However, Drinkel feels good about incoming talent, especially on defense. It's a "cool mix of young talented guys ... and transfers," he observed during MAC Media Day.
