It was Miami's fifth straight victory and first overall title since 2019.Toledo, which had posted nine straight wins -- including a regular season victory at Miami -- failed in its bid to repeat as MAC champs. Toledo downed Ohio in the 2022 title game. Toledo QB Dequann Finn, fresh off his Vern Smith Leadership Award as the MAC's top player (awarded earlier in the week), accounted for most of UT's offensive production. The new scheduling model will eliminate the MAC East and West Divisions. Among conference coaches, UT got seven votes to win it all, followed by Ohio (4) and Buffalo (1). Suffice it to say, Toledo has thusfar lived up to the respect. The Rockets are riding an 11-game winning streak and are currently ranked No. 23 in the latest Associated Press college football poll. They are now hours away from a second consecutive MAC championship . . . IF . . . they can defeat a somewhat surprising opponent. Instead of a rematch with preseason MAC East favorite Ohio, Toledo will face Miami. The RedHawks were picked to finish second in the East and received quite a bit of respect from numerous publications. However, Ohio's returning cast, including MVP quarterback Kurtis Rourke, gave OU the preseason nod. Like UT, Miami put together an outstanding regular season. All of the awards were voted on by the league's 12 head coaches. Toledo quarterback Dequan Finn was tabbed the winner of the 42nd Vern Smith Leadership Award as the top player in the MAC. Rockets' Head Coach Jason Candle was selected as the Head Coach of the Year, while UT's Peny Boone earned Offensive Player of the Year honors. Nichols named Groza Award finalist ![]() WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Graham Nicholson is one of three finalists for the Lou Groza Award, given to the nation's top placekicker. The junior is the first RedHawk and third placekicker in Mid-American Conference history to be named a finalist for the Lou Groza Award. Jose Pizano (UNLV) and Will Reichard (Alabama) are also up for the award. The Cincinnati, Ohio native has been nearly perfect this season, connecting on 23-of-23 field goal attempts and 33-of-34 extra points. He is 8-of-8 on field goals over 40 yards, which includes a career-long 52-yarder earlier this year in a win over Bowling Green.
