Offensive Player of the Week: UMass QB Blake Frohnapfel
UMass quarterback Blake Frohnapfel (Stafford, Va.) threw for a career-high, a UMass and MAC single-game record 589 yards in a 47-42 loss to Bowling Green. He also tied the UMass school record for touchdowns in a game with five. The graduate student connected on 36-of-61 attempts hitting nine different receivers. The 589 yards passing are the second most nationally for a single game this season and were just four shy of the No. 1 spot. Frohnapfel now ranks 7th nationally in total passing yards this season with 1,471 yards. Since 2004, only nine times has an FBS quarterback thrown for 569 yards or more in a game. The 589 yards is also a new Mid-American Conference record.
Defensive Player of the Week: Akron LB Jatavis Brown
Akron junior linebacker Jatavis Brown (Belle Glade, Fla.) led the Zips’ defense with 11 tackles, including a career-high nine solo stops, and a sack for a loss of eight yards in a 21-10 win at Pittsburgh. A starter in all four games, Brown is the Zips’ top defender with 30 tackles, including a team-best 19 solo stops, 4.0 TFL, a sack, a forced fumble, and a break-up.
Special Teams Player of the Week: Bowling Green K Tyler Tate
Bowling Green junior Tyler Tate (Carroll, Ohio) continued an impressive season on Saturday at UMass, helping the Falcons to a 47-42 victory with his 11 points. Tate recorded five points on extra point attempts, and added six more on two field goal makes of 21 and 33 yards. Tate is now 8-of-10 on field goal attempts this season, following a 2-for-2 day at UMass.
Offensive Player of the Week: Toledo QB Logan Woodside
Toledo sophomore quarterback Logan Woodside (Frankfort, Ky.) completed 23-of-34 passes for a career-high 339 yards and two touchdowns in a 42-28 win over Central Michigan at the Glass Bowl. Woodside’s previous best effort was 322 yards at Cincinnati on Sept. 12.
Defensive Player of the Week: Western Michigan DB Ronald Zamort
Western Michigan junior defensive back Ronald Zamort (Delray Beach, Fla.) had three tackles, one interception for 39 yards, one pass break up and two passes defensed in a 35-17 loss at Virginia Tech. Zamort picked off a Michael Webber pass and returned it 39 yards to the Virginia Tech three yard line to help set up Western Michigan's first touchdown in the 35-17 loss at Virginia Tech. The interception was his second of the season and the second time a turnover created by him has led directly to a touchdown. Zamort also had a pass break up to go with his three tackles. After the two passes defended in the game it brought his season total to eight, best in the MAC and tied for third-best in the country.
Special Teams Player of the Week: Central Michigan P Ron Coluzzi
Central Michigan sophomore punter Ron Coluzzi (Naperville, Ill.) had three punts over 50 yards in a 42-28 loss at Toledo, averaging 52.7 yards per kick. Coluzzi hit a career-long 55 yarder in the second quarter of the game. The sophomore also placed all three punts inside the 30 and two inside the 20.
